GET OVER IT CONGRESS AND ALLOW IMMIGRATION BENEFITS FOR SAME SEX COUPLES

Rate this Entry

Isn't it time we moved in to the 21st century on this issue and start giving these couples the same rights they have in most western industrialized countries? And what better way to say "go to hell" to Osama Bin Ladin than to start treating legally married individuals or individuals in legally recognized civil unions have the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts.

The Los Angeles Times reports on a story that plays out every day all over the country. The US citizens discriminated against in these cases deserve to be united with their spouses and partners. Even if we don't grant them the right to marry or register a civil union, we should still be permitting couples to remain together. It's inhumane and no doubt a violation of the US citizen's Constitutional right to equal protection (even if we don't have judges courageous enough to say so).

Greg, thanks for speaking out for us. I'm gay and am in a long term relationship with my partner who is an American citizen. Having lived in this country for over ten years, first as a student and then working on a H1b visa, I thought the end of the wait was near when my PD became current on Jun 1. Feeling there was no rush to file since in July my PD would still be current, I took my time to get things ready and the application was mailed out on Jun 29, only to find out, well, all I can say is, what a fool I was, to put trust in a system that has demonstrated itself, time and time again, to rather resemble the Chinese government that I have been trying so hard to stay away from.

I think it will take gay senators and congressmen to realize that...

Thanks for exposing this and putting it on your blog Greg. This often goes unnoticed and it is extremely unfair to same-sex couples. Some of these people will end up getting their green cards anyways so why does it matter if we allow them to get it through their partners. It makes no sense. My good friend and her partner were in the same situation and they left their community, workplace, family and friends to a destination that was more hospitable to their relationship.

    Thanks Greg,
My partner and I have been in the "green card" process for 9 years. We are hoping to clear a second hurdle with the US DOL (a reapeat of what we did in May, 2003). We have spent over $30K in fees for various visa filings and we are still not there yet. It would have been much easier if I could have sponsored him. We are LUCKY that we could find an employer willing to put up with the hastle, time and expense. There are many couples out there that do not have that opportunity.
