AMENDMENTS TABLED ONE BY ONE UNTIL....

Rate this Entry

Six amendments and six votes to table. The seventh was Senator Baucus' amendment to scrap REAL ID and low and behold the motion to table fails and debate proceeds. So that's the end of debate for today. Tomorrow morning will be the key vote to end debate and 60 votes are needed. If that passes, the remaining amendments will be considered and a final vote on the bill would happen on late Friday.

If you ask me to lay odds, I'd say the cloture vote will pass in a squeaker - 62 votes is my prediction. We'll see how close I am.

UPDATE: Maybe I'm off if you believe reports that several Senators have changed their views in the last few hours. But this bill has been pronounced dead many times in the past so I wouldn't count it out yet.

so the bill is dead then ? let's see tommorow, what's the use of holding the gran bargain or the middle ground if it will cause the death of the bill ? I mean so what the grand bargain holds ? but it meanst that we will get nothing at all, I really don't understand.

The bill is not dead. Debate continues tomorrow.

oh, thought they will hold another vote to continue the debate, then introduce more amendments.

They will vote again to end debate on the baucus/tester
amendment. They need 60 votes for that. They have the votes for that. Then they'll continue with the other amendments. The Final passage vote of cloture will take place at the end, where you need 60 votes.

I hope the Senate bill passes. I hope the Senators stop and think how many lives are in thier hands.

If the votes are not there, everyone wakes up tomorrow and it's just another day but not for the people who are left with thier lives hanging with no hope or future. God please help us.....

I am currently watching the senate debate on c-span leading uo to the second cloture vote. This whole scenario reminds me of a time in my home country where the conservative party helped ram through a law very unpopular with their base (a consumption tax). It was political suicide for them to get into bed politically with the left and it took them close to 20 years to recover from it. I see the republican senators who support this bill AND president Bush commiting political suicide in the same way. The Democrats must just be loving this. The bill will fail ultimately, but the damage will be done. How stupid.

Looks dead, many undecideds have now voted no (Bond, Webb, Bingaman, Ensign, Murkowski and others)

Was'nt even close. I guess we can now officially forget about reform for at least the next 5 years. Well, I guess we all prayed hard, maybe God has some other plans.

I hope these senators can sleep easy tonight, knowing they destroyed the hopes of millions.

    Hi Gregg,
    please say something.

I was right this time it was really really dead, now let's see if there are conseqeunces, no 4.4 billion fund for border security,no extra border patrol etc, things will be just get worse, and even those who want to come across legally because of backlog will coss the desert, even if they have priotiy dates and still have to wait another 10 years, they would rather cross the border and work than wait home.

Things are looking grim, even for people like US who are waiting on USICS and hoping the EB numbers don't start rolling back, which they will, no question about it.

I hope the democrates in the Senate can give and help ensure passage of at least border security in the next two years so then once that is in place we can finally get something regarding immigration. I hate to say this, but I don't think anything regarding immigration can pass untill these anti-immigrant senators can get their border security first.

I hate to do this, but I think all of us immigrants should get on the border security band wagon and ask our democrat senators such as Kennedy to secure our borders as soon as possible so we can finally, even after 2 years, get some relief and get real reform in immigration. What do you say guys, how does that sound?

Well, well, well; there goes the CIR Bill. That was some brilliant political maneuvering by the Democrats. The Republicans have commited politial suicide at least with their Hispanic voters. If they used to have 35% before now, I would say that has gone down to 2%. What they don't realize is that the people they are asking to be deported are family members (fathers, mothers, children, aunts, cousins etc) of those that are citizens and can vote in the 2008 Presidential elections. And thats only the Hispanic vote. Did you not know that there are Vietnamese, Chinese, Europeans, Indians, Nigerians and so on that would have benefited from this bill? The true color of the Republican party has just come out and the repercussion will be known next year; stay tuned!

this been hapeening for 100 of years, nothing really change, it's just the latinos are their target, even though they are not the only minority group that are illegals, deep inside of these Sessions and Demints they hate immigrants illegal or legal , Tancredo is their poster boy, they won't even address the backlogs Employment based or Family based , they should have address the security now and other issues , forget amnesty or z visa at least sealing the border is a step and a starting point, now we will continue with the status quo and expect another 12 million before they tackle this issue again. God help us and goodluck to everybody. I hope these anti immigrant senators lose in the next election, and an new Democrat President will be elected, the American people should get rid of the racism and hate it this country.

Are you kidding me? Do you think that Alabama would ever elect a senator that loves immigrants? There's a reason why Sessions is so anti-immigrant, it's the racist voters in his State that would never elect a Senator that is for immigration.

As a legal immigrant trying to get GC through employment ...I'm celebrating the defeat of this "comprehensive" immigration reform. GOOD RIDDANCE. The bill was heavily in favor of illegals and family based migrants.
