BROWNBACK AND KYL TO DO A SWITCHEROO

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.

If you would have told me a year ago that Sam Brownback, arguably the Republican with the most pro-immigration record in Congress, would come out against comprehensive immigration reform and Arizona Republican Jon Kyle, a vocal opponent of CIR last year, would be leading the negotiations to make a deal with Democrats on the bill, I would have been pretty skeptical.

But that appears to be what's happening. Brownback appears to have chucked all of his principles to appease the rabid anti-immigrant wing of his party and is all of sudden Mr. Tough Guy on immigration issues. And Jon Kyl is assuming the role of statesman and a mature "do what's best for the country" rather than what is in my best political interest kind of politician.

Proving once again that lawyers are often the worst situatied of informed obeservers when it comes to predicting the behavior of conservatives and Republicans? It's like asking me to guess who will win an itnernal fight at MoveOn.org over whether to oppose the invasion of Afghanistan or Iraq more. I'm just not up to it (they morphed from the first to the second, so much so that most members deny they ever opposed the first or that Michael Moore's film opposed both).
Seriously though, Brownback has always struck me as thoughtful but suffers from a, Rep., Media, mentality akin to McCain's, and that tends to lead to a type of moral flexibility on such issues that'll make one suddenly cleave to the base when it is least expected, and that's different from that of a "true believer" like Kyle, who cares much more what William F. Buckley "outsider" intellectuals think of him and kind of likes the scorn of the MSM types as it reassures him he's doing right. In my experience, Kyle types are, however, amenable to convincing with solid data put forward by folks without axes to grind, and are capable of putting their heads on the chopping blocks for "what's right" and for friends, especially iconclastic ones.
Both types have their faults, of course, but they're not often what folks on the other side expect.
Mickey Kaus, over at Slate, gets us.
I may be wrong too, but, naturally, I don't think so. ;-)
