Comment: Romney OK With DREAM?

At last night's Presidential Debate, Mitt Romney surprised a number of onlookers by saying: "The kids of those that came here illegally, those kids I think should have a pathway to become a permanent resident of the United States, and military service, for instance, is one way they would have that kind of pathway to become a permanent resident." Mr. Romney did not clarify the first part of his statement and he had previously indicated that he would support the military component to the DREAM Act, so it is unclear whether he is now willing to look at additional mechanisms by which DREAMers could gain legal status. President Obama also reminded viewers that Mr. Romney has promised to veto any DREAM Act that would come across his desk if elected and that he previously made comments about self-deportation that angered many voters. Nonetheless, Mr. Romney's statements suggests his beliefs on immigration are not as far removed from reality as his immigration comments and plans to date have appeared. Romney, of course, remains handcuffed by a poor choice of an immigration policy advisor in Kris Kobach. Mr. Kobach's continued incendiary rhetoric on immigration matters will be difficult to overcome when the campaign is pressed to articulate Mr. Romney's comments. Mr. Kobach consistently backtracks to fringe opinions when Mr. Romney speaks in more moderate terms. While Mr. Romney may get a slight upward push from his comments at the debate, he will be unable to make any real strides among voters to whom immigration issues matter until his campaign can be seen as supportive of the opinions he expresses; this has not been the case, so voters must legitimately wonder whether a Romney administration would act on immigration in any meaningful way. Given the current political climate, that would seem unlikely. The Washington Times carried a more full commentary, which can be read here. What should the Romney campaign do? Will any movement to the center be seen as disingenuous? Or could it have an effect come November? Tell us what you think: editor@ilw.com.
