Dec 28 - Immigrants Create Jobs

Rate this Entry

Comment: Immigrants Create Jobs - Tamar Jacoby writes in US News & World Report "Far from taking jobs from Americans, most immigrants create jobs. According to one recent study, every 100 H-1B workers who came to the U.S. from 2001 to 2010 correlated with 183 new jobs for U.S. workers - that's the power of innovation and entrepreneurship. So why a temporary visa? If these people are so productive, don't we want them to settle permanently?... In the long run, America needs both - a ready supply of short-term visas and more green cards, made available faster, for knowledge workers." We couldn't agree more, and we would also like to point out that America's need for lower skilled labor is as real and large. Just as we need knowledge workers to keep our high-tech companies going, we also need farm workers, laundry workers and kitchen workers to keep our farms, laundries and restaurants going. We need both a short term and long term solution for these parts of the economy as well. Please let us know your thoughts by commenting in our letters section or by writing to us at editor@ilw.com.
