Mar 14 - Mice At ICE Run Amok

ITEMS

1. Comment: Mice At ICE Run Amok - A US Citizen (and Army

veteran) who was locked up in ICE detention for 7 months because

ICE officials weren't satisfied with his status finally received

an official apology from ICE.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-citizen-sweep-20110224,0,1414200.story

In a letter that was part of the settlement, Philip Lynch, chief

of the civil division in the U.S. attorney's office writes "I

believe that none of my clients - would ever have wanted to, or

knowingly would have, detained a veteran and United States

citizen". Naturally, ICE claims it was all a mistake, and said

that "[ICE] Director John Morton [has] ordered procedures changed

to avoid future mistakes". We are not quite sure that this was a

procedural mix up. An April 13, 2009 article

http://tucsoncitizen.com/morgue/2009/04/13/114221-dozens-of-u-s-citizens-deported/

reports dozens (if not hundreds) of cases of ICE detaining US

citizens (most of those detained are those with the fewest

resources: the mentally ill, minorities, the poor, and children).

In the face of the large numbers of US citizens unlawfully

detained by ICE, it is difficult to acquiesce in the statement of

the US attorney - if ICE truly cared about not

detaining/deporting US citizens the numbers of these "mistakes"

would be no where near as large as they indeed are. We believe

that a not-insignificant portion of ICE staffers are infected by

the "deport-'em-all" mentality, and that the current management

installed by President Obama has not flushed these folks out.

While this particular citizen was finally released and received

an apology, there is no excuse for the dozens, if not hundreds,

of US citizens currently in ICE detention.
