1. Comment: SOTU - President Obama addresses Congress tomorrow on

the State of the Union. Last year, Mr. Obama paid only lip

service to immigration in his SOTU address, which was a factor,

albeit small, in keeping some Democratic supporters at home in

November 2010, leading, in small part to the shellacking that the

Democrats then received. This year, Mr. Obama will undoubtedly

focus on jobs, the budget and the economy, these being the issues

on which the 2012 election will largely turn. But not entirely.

We believe immigration will be an issue in New Mexico, Nevada and

Colorado for 2012. Charting a course to the White House without

these three states is not easy, the electoral math for a Democrat

is difficult without the Southwest, where the immigrant vote is

no artifact of the future, but a reality today (just ask Sharon

Angle). Mr. Obama faces a choice. He can pay more lip service to

immigration again, perhaps a few more words than last year,

undoubtedly that's what would please the Republicans most, being

as they are about to launch an E-Verify blitzkrieg. Or he can

pledge to take concrete steps entirely within his own unfettered

Executive discretion - just as granting TPS to all - and

guarantee real support from important voters in the Southwest and

elsewhere. Either way, Mr. Obama can be sure that an interested

and increasingly sophisticated immigrant press will be watching,

and will deliver their judgment on his SOTU address where it

matters most - the ballot box.

    Two points: first, in re the SOTU speech and the overall theme of this site...please, anyone, tell me when, in the history of nations, has any nation allowed (or even considered)the desires and demands of citizens of a foreign country in formulating their own internal policies and direction? Today, in this site especially, although not uniquely, the US is expected to consider the demands of Mexico and its citizens in our internal politics, even to the point of threatening our political leaders with defeat for failing to do so! This is unheard of! When and where has this ever happened before? Of course Mexico would warmly welcome blatant demands made on its Congress and Government by Americans, right?
    Second point: although I perfectly understand why it is done, it is totally false to continue to refer to our current immigration problems by using the terms "hispanic" and "latino". This is sheer obfuscation. In today's stories...I would ask how many Cubans or Argentines or Paraguayans or Puertorricans were arrested and deported? Are not they all "latinos" and "hispanics"? Of the three largest so-called "latino" groups in the US, Mexicans, Cubans and Puertorricans, Mexicans are by far the largest and the cause of virtually the entire problem today. Puertorricans are citizens and therefore have no immigration difficulties. Cubans have their own immigration categories and their problems are primarily caused by Cuba itself, not the US. Only Mexicans (and Central Americans, who are essentially the same people)come across the southern border ilegally. Only Mexicans were rounded up in the recent busts and deported. As the photos from Arizona show, it is the Mexican flag which is carried by the protestors...why not, then, be clear and honest and refer to the illegals by their actual nationality? They are Mexicans and the problem is one of Mexicans coming into the country illegally and settling here. Not Cubans, not Puertorricans, not Argentines or Chileans. Call them what they are...Mexicans, not "latinos" or "hispanics".

    Reflections over a Martin Luther King Jr. Long Weekend

    I am a public high school teacher. I always look forward to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday because teaching about the man and his life is one of the best lessons that I give all year. It happens the same way year after year. On Friday I remind students that we don't have school on Monday. They invariably say, "Why, miss?" Why, you ask? Well, I would love to tell you. I feel an overwhelming sense of pride and hope when I tell the story of this man. You see, my students are all English Language Learners. They do not know all the cultural and historic facts of our nation. It is my job to teach them and they are very eager to learn.
    This year I had a bit of a different response from my students. It was eye opening. Here I am saying that Dr. King had won a great victory. That through non-violent measures he had succeeded in securing the rights this nation had said belonged to all men but had been denied to persons of color. My students just looked at me like...What? Racism is alive and well and we feel its wrath almost daily. They were like ...Do you believe this? Our teacher who we respect is all *****le eyed believing these lies. I felt so defeated. My favorite victory in American history is yet un-won. How could I tell them they were wrong? Racism is at the bottom of the immigration debate. People living among us are not wanted, because they're different.
    So I had to let go of my former thoughts and reassess. This holiday still is important. It still is a day to cause one pride to be an American. What it means is that at a national level we have proclaimed we are not racist. We have decried such bigotry. Yet in the hearts of many, on a social rather that political level, racism lives on. In fact, this nation having suffered the Civil Rights Movement makes it impossible for us today to look at the immigration debate honestly. No one wants to say they are racist. We've determined that that is unacceptable. But what else is it? If not racism, why can't my students, who have lived in this country and will stay in this country, be allowed to be true members of society? Why must they be segregated, unable to attend American schools, drive, buy houses?
    Now hold on! How can she use that word, segregated, to apply to immigrants in the 21st century? Really, how can you not see the parallel? In fact, when I think of the failure of the DREAM Act and the effort to repeal the 14th Amendment, I think, "Haven't we already done this?" As a nation, haven't we already fought the race battle? Did we learn nothing from the Civil Rights Movement? We are talking about people who live among us, who sweat and learn and go home to their families just like everyone. I am frustrated by people who think of immigrants only as workers. Apparently the U.S. found its first wealth on the backs of slaves and is enjoying the same prosperity on the backs of immigrants. But to think of these workers as citizens! Oh no, we just use them to make our businesses run cheaply but offer no chance at the smallest piece of the pie.
    Spirit of Martin Luther King Jr.! Help us! America is looking ugly! We are hating, we are excluding, we are forgetting you.

    To Julie Cole,
    You forget, conveniently, that the civil rights movement was about the denial of constitutional (civil) rights to AMERICANS. Americans who had, in virtually all cases, been in this country since its beginnings and by no means were all slaves. These were people who had, in one way or another, "paid their dues" and were by any definition Americans. The citizens and government of the United States (or any other country) have no obligation, legal or moral, to extend the same rights to foreigners, especially foreigners who are here illegally in defiance of our laws. No other country does this, most especially Mexico, and it is the height of hypocrisy for people like Ms Cole to berate the US and Americans while not extending her anger to Mexico and other countries with far worse records re. immigration.
    Mexicans have their own country: the fact that they have managed to completely ruin it over the past 200 years is not the fault of the United States and Americans. We have no duty to allow them to now swarm into our country and repeat the process here. I, and I know I speak for the vast majority of Americans, black and white, do not want my country swarmed by Mexicans. I do not want to "press 1 for English". I am angered when I see the Mexican flag waving at immigrant demonstrations. I do not like to see the crowds cheering for the Mexican soccer team when it plays the US team here in the US. I don't like the huge financial outlays being imposed on us as taxpayers to support all your wonderful Mexican children who should be home in Mexico. My recommendation for you and others who share your love of Mexicans would be to drive a few miles south, get a job (if you could. Only Mexicans are allowed to work in Mexico)and spend the rest of your days with those kids you seem to love so much. Better that than bringing all of them up here to this horrible country!

    What I would like to say to Don Miller and those with his views is the following: Why don't you ever get angry at the US citizen employers who hire illegal workers? Rather than misplacing your irritation at poor people who come to the US to find the work they cannot find at home, to feed their children and improve their own lives, why not vent your wrath on the US employers, without whom not many would come illegally. Those employers are the ones causing our "immigration problems."If there was no money to be made here, there would be few illegal entries. They don't come here to go to Disneyland. And despite what the bigots say they don't come here to get welfare. They are hard workers. So employers make a lot of money on the backs of those who make only a pittance. The employers by the way are also avoiding US tax laws. And yet you are only mad at Mexicans. Please note too that there are plenty of illegal Canadians and Irish, and Central and South Americans living in the United States.
