  2. Roger Algase's Avatar
James Brown's comment is typical of the falsehood and prejudice that is at the heart of the anti-immigrant movement. Yes, of course, illegal immigrants are illegal, by definition. But "Anchor Babies" are not illegal. They are US citizens, according to the US Constitution. The anti-immigrant agenda is 1) Enforce the law to the letter when it can be used to keep brown people out. 2) Ignore or change the law when it would let brown people in or allow them to stay here.

With regard to Charles Kuck's article in the January 5 ID, it is not only the DREAM Act that was about race. Almost the entire anti-immigrant movement is based on trying to keep brown people out of America. I have been saying this in the pages of ID for the past several years. I am glad to see that I am now in such good company.

This is not the only time that America's immigration conflict has been about race. Ask the German-speaking immigrants in colonial Pennsylvania, the Irish in the mid-19th century, the Chinese in the time of the exclusion laws at the turn of the 20th century, the Jews, Italians and many other ethnic groups shut out by the 1924 immigration law, and the Japanese-Americans locked up during World War II, as well as black and Latino immigrants and US citizens for most of our history. They would have been able to provide plenty of pertinent information. Many of them are still able to do so.
