ITEMS

1. Comment: DREAM Is Closer - The DREAM Act is one step closer to

becoming a reality. Last night, the House approved its version of

the DREAM Act with 216 votes in favor and 198 against. You heard

it here first. During the 111th Congress, Immigration Daily

continuously argued that the House should move before the Senate

to move immigration benefit legislation. We thank the House

Democratic leadership for their efforts to provide much-needed

relief to immigrant communities across the country. We also

commend the eight Republican representatives who voted in favor

of the DREAM Act.

Earlier this week, Majority Leader Reid filed for cloture for the

Senate-version of the DREAM Act (S. 3992). The cloture vote was

expected this morning, but in a last-minute maneuver, Majority

Leader Reid made a motion to table, thus buying more time for

advocates to convince undecided Republicans and Democrats to vote

in favor of the legislation. The motion was successfully approved

with 59 votes in favor and 40 against. Once again, this morning's

vote showed bi-partisanship with 5 Republican voting in favor.

Our best sources on the Hill indicate that the final vote in the

Senate will take place next week. We urge Congress to make the

DREAM Act become the legislation where both parties find common

ground, and urge Democrats and Republicans to finally provide the

relief that immigrant communities have been yearning for.
