I've told you before, and I told Michele Kim just before she left, that this would be the death of Letters to the Editor. She told me ID was moving ahead into the world of technology. But I was right and it has not worked. Now you plead to ID readers to play your game. They won't. Most don't really care to engage in a "real time" discussion - they are too busy; I for one. But I did look forward with eager anticipation to the daily ID's to check out Letters to the Editor. Now, I briefly scan the opinions that you pass off as Articles and delete.

I believe ID's rise to success was due in part to the Letters to the Editor feature, which had a great following. I contributed regularly for about five years. I received much positive feedback regarding the content of my letters. You would be surprised how many people read ID just to keep up on the Letters to the Editor. You may also be surprised at how many people don't bother with it anymore now that the letters are absent.

Remember, you heard it from me first . . . long, long ago.

    Best wishes.

    Dear Mr. Murray,

Thank you for your comments - we appreciate your candor. You are welcome to email your letters to us at as you emailed the letter below.

We are looking for ways of reigniting the Letters to Editor community. We will be experimenting with various ideas for giving greater prominence to the comments in Immigration Daily. For instance, we might include the names of people who have posted comments in every issue of Immigration Daily and link to them. We might Tweet about the comments we have received, etc. Please stay tuned.

As is often the case, David Murray's comments are "right on". As a former immigration officer and a "restrictionist", I was drawn to ID for the "Letters to the Editor", even though I was at odds with the views expressed in about 90% of the posts. There were a lot of rants, but there were also some thought-provoking comments. It appears that the new format just isn't working. I'm no "rocket surgeon" but it seems to me that ID might do better to return to the old format, rather than taking off is another unexplored direction.

Ditto. I really enjoyed the letters but the new format isn't working.
  5. Editor, ILW.COM's Avatar
    Dr Mr. Frecker and Sergi,

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. Returning to the old format of letters is certainly an option we would consider. One of the reasons we went away from the old format was that an increasing number of our readers are reading Immigration Daily on their mobile devices. Inclusion of letters increases the length of each issue considerably and becomes hard to read in mobile devices.
