  1. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
Based on reading two articles about President Obama's speech in today's ID, there seems to be general agreement that his approach is totally unsatisfactory. But we have to ask why. Is Obama by instinct a bigot who doesn't want to let any more immigrants into America because they are mainly brown, rather than white? Nothing could be more absurd. Is he an Uncle Tom for the bigots who do feel this way, in Arizona and elsewhere? Not very likely. Is he afraid to speak out on controversial issues or to take on powerful special interests? Ask the health insurers, Wall Street and BP.

What then, is holding the President back from acting on his own best instincts toward immigrants, whom he promised not to scapegoat as a presidential candidate? There may be a number of answers, but I can only think of one that makes any sense: It's the economy, stupid. In a time when unemployment is reaching depression levels, and no quick solutions are in sight, there is wide fear, if not terror, at the thought of immigrants taking American jobs.

Of course, race is involved, but even I would not argue that this is the only factor. Few people really understand the contribution that immigrants of all backgrounds and skin colors are making to the economy and how much more they could contribute to our recovery if we had more sensible immigration policies. This, I believe, is the issue that needs to be addressed in depth by immigration advocates. The Immigration Policy Center is doing excellent work on this. Many other people and organizations need to follow its lead.
