  1. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
Harry DeMell, Esq. may make some worthwhile points in his article in the June 23 ID about why nobody wants immigration reform, but they are eclipsed by his whopper to the effect that the last presidential candidate who supported "amnesty" lost both the Hispanic vote and the election.

This, I assume, is a reference to Senator John McCain, who indeed supported legalization before being forced to recant his heresy for fear of losing the presidential election, not to mention the distinct possibility of being caught up in an electoral auto da f? in his race to retain his Senate seat against the anti-Latino demagogue J.D. Hayworth in Arizona.

But the above statement by Mr. DeMell assumes that McCain's successful opponent, Barack Obama, opposed amnesty. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Obama, then a US senator, voted for the Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill co-sponsored by McCain. Therefore, both presidential candidates were on record as having supported "amnesty". Only one of them flipped-flopped and changed his mind before the presidential election. He was the candidate who lost.

Anyone who wishes an article on immigration to have any sort of credibility should try harder to avoid such an obvious distortion.
  2. Nolan Rappaport 's Avatar
From Harry DeMell's article in the June 23 ILW.com, "The administration is also playing with the law to prevent meaningful action in this area. By not enforcing the law they hope to create a situation where there is a cry for comprehensive immigration reform (CIR), a code word for amnesty." This is not a fair criticism. It suggests that the law was being enforced under the previous Republican Administration and the Obama Administration decided to stop enforcing it to pressure the country into accepting "comprehensive" reform. That's not the case. I can't think of any time when the immigration laws were enforced on the level necessary to reduce the presence of undocumented aliens by even 20% a year. Do you recall an Administration that put enough agents in the field to inspect even 25% of the work sites in the country and issue fines to the ones with undocumented workers? Can you recall a time when an Administration provided ICE with enough detention centers to put an end to "catch and release" on a permanent basis? Or do you think the 12 million or so undocumented aliens in the country are here on account of the lax enforcement of the Obama Administration?
  3. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
With regard to Nolan Rappaport's comment on Henry DeMell's article, has it ever occurred to anyone that the immigration laws, as they are written, cannot be fully enforced without turning this country into a police state, as Arizona is trying to do? And has it ever occurred to anyone that even if this country had the resources, personnel and contempt for human rights needed to enforce the current laws in their full severity, that would deter few, if any, people from coming or working here illegally as long as there is work and the hope of a decent life to be had?

Full enforcement of existing immigration law is a pipe dream, no more realistic than the fantasy of an all white America, with which the drive for increased enforcement and the opposition to immigration reform is so closely bound up in the minds of many (though not all) restrictionists.
