  1. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
A poll reported in today's Washington Post says that most Americans support the Arizona "Wo sind Ihre Papiere?" immigration law allowing local police to stop almost anyone at will to ask for the person's immigration papers. The same poll also says that most Americans favor a path to legal status for people in this country without authorization. The fact that these two objectives are totally incompatible does not seem to bather most respondents, if they are even aware of this conflict.

The lesson to be learned would appear to be that when profound moral and human rights questions are at issue, as is the case with immigration, it is better not to pay any attention to polls. If politicians had blindly followed public opinion in the 1960's, there would have been no civil rights laws, racial segregation would still be legal in the South (and in Washington DC), and US Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren would have been impeached, if not tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail.

I am old enough to have been around then. I remember the ferocious outburst of sheer hatred that greeted the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation decision, not just in the South (the case actually originated in Kansas) but throughout America.

Every time I read one of the tens of thousands of Internet comments to the effect that every illegal Mexican should be locked up and deported forthwith (if not shot first) along with his or her US citizen children, I am reminded of that other era of hate half a century ago. Arizona is showing us that this earlier period of racial hatred and intolerance is not yet over. Only the target ethnic group has changed.
  2. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
Typographical correction - I meant to write: "bother most respondents".
  3. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
I realize that I may be accused of excessive posting on the ID letters site, particularly at a time when no one else seems to be writing and I have no way of knowing if anyone is even bothering to read this site anymore. Maybe I am just writing to myself.

But there is so much bad news with relation to the Arizona immigration law that someone has to say something about it. According to a tweet in the June 17 ID, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has announced that beginning on Day 1 of the effective date of the Arizona hate law (July 29), he will lock all suspected illegals up in county jails instead of turning them over to the federal government. How, may I ask, does this promote enforcement of federal law? We also know, from the numerous lawsuits and investigations surrounding Arpaio's office, what incarceration in his county jails allegedly means.

His point, obviously, is to evade any federal control that might try to make sure that even minimal standards of due process or human rights of detainees are respected. According to some of the stories that have been circulating about Arpaio's jails, Guant?namo would allegedly be like a five-star hotel by comparison.

What is even more sickening than the alleged conditions in the Maricopa County jails is the stench of hypocrisy from the Arizona legislature and governor's office claiming that the state is only trying to enforce federal immigration law, not evade it. As Arpaio has just once again made clear, nothing could be further from the truth.

Odious as this hypocritical lie may be, what is coming out of the White House is even worse. The president claims to have problems with the Arizona law. But where is the federal government's lawsuit seeking to stop it from going into effect? Why is this task being left to local officials and private immigrant rights groups? Have Attorney General Holder and DHS Secretary Napolitano finally managed even to find the time to read this "voluminous" Arizona law (all ten pages of it)?

Carl Shusterman, in his June 17 ID article, calls the current EOIR backlog the BP oil spill of immigration. I would call Arizona's unconstitutional, racial profiling (despite that state's hypocritical, "protesteth too much" disclaimers to the contrary) law immigration's 9/11. "Wo sind Ihre Papiere?"
  4. Cheryl Rodriguez 's Avatar
Here we are with an issue that is so crazy that everyone is fighting, killing, protesting, defining each other. We are forgetting about God, and HIS, Country. God said, "Love thy neighbor with all our hearts". Here we are once again with this who belongs here and who don't. Our families came here walking, on ships, pack away like animals. How do we know who is legal or not? Now we have this Governor, who signed a paper saying, stop any and everyone who is different in color if they belong. I don't understand, How long has she been governor? This has went on for so long. They have been allowed to work, rent houses, children going to school, paying bills, shopping in stores, (with cash). Not all is on welfare, unless they have an american child. Now we have people here that has been here for years, living as we do. Not causing no problems for anyone. Now she don't want them in Az., Or people follow behind others and agree. Will I don't agree, I feel they are apart of us as people. Years ago it was blacks send them back where they came from, treated them like dogs and still do. If your not the right color you don't fit in. It's wrong. God created one nation of the same blood. We as people have to realize that things are happening around the world letting usknow that He's on His way, We are to love and have peace among us all. Let them stay to feed their children and live.. There's enough for everyone, as americans lets show our hearts and work this out and stop being selfish. Cause you know as american with families we'll do whatever it takes to feed our children, see they go to school and to do whatever it takes to keep them happy and safe.. These people are the same they are here to feed their families and to give their children a better life. To send them back to a country where they are shooting and killing, this is their home alot of them you're trying to send back has been here for years, Where are they to go to the streets? Thank you
