    Re: the hunger strike outside Senator Schumer's office (June 4 ID), yes, illegal immigrants, undocumented workers, or whatever one wants to call them, are at fault for not complying with the law. And yes, America is at fault for not updating its immigration laws to correspond to the reality that we are part of a hemisphere, and a world, where most people are not white.

    And most of all, America is at fault for making no distinction between hard-working, otherwise law-abiding people who are only seeking a better life in this country on the one hand, and the most hardened criminals and dangerous terrorists on the other. Commitment to the American dream of justice and equality of opportunity is on the side of the hunger strikers, even though they may lack proper papers.

    Our politicians who are too consumed by fear or hate to take action to legalize the hunger strikers, and the millions of deserving people they represent, are the ones who are earning our strongest possible condemnation.
