  1. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
Suspending 287(g)immigration enforcement-sharing programs, not only with Arizona local officials, but everywhere in the country, should be a top priority for DHS. As I have argued in previous ID posts, these programs may have some merit, at least in theory, in that DHS theoretically remains in control, so that the more egregious types of local racial profiling and horrible detention conditions will not be allowed to take place.

But as we all know from the example of Maricopa County's beloved (by whites) Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the federal government has in fact been doing very little to stop these abuses by local officials. Saying that DHS really controls local officials under 287(g) is a little like saying that the Department of the Interior really controls what BP and its contractors are doing one mile below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico.

As we all know, or should know, DHS recently tried to revoke Sheriff Joe's 287(g) authority (or, more accurately, some of it). Ergo, presto, voil?! The Arizona immigration law appeared. It is not all that easy to put the genie, the Golem, the Frankenstein, however you want to call it, of hatred, back in the bottle, or to take away the 287(g) punchbowl of prejudice. But that doesn't mean that Obama shouldn't try.

The Arizona law is Obama's anti-immigration oil spill. He had better catch on to that and start putting on the lid before it is too late.
  2. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
Just one more addition to my last comment. What we really need from Barack Obama is not just a lid on the cesspool of hatred and prejudice that he and his clueless Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, who is to developing humane immigration policy what Jimmy Carter was to rescuing hostages, have been digging deeper and deeper under Section 287(g), but a brand new well, a well of real immigration reform. But who in this spineless, enforcement-obsessed administration has the will, let alone the ability, to start digging?
  3. Jimmy Smith's Avatar
As long as I have been reading the rants of Algase I have yet to understand what immigration law, immigration control, or any action for or against those who were not born in the U. S. would be like if he was to be put in charge (God forbid!). If he is so thoughtful and considerate of what he refers to as "...the brown masses..." he should consider going to where they are fleeing from so that he may assist them in improving their lot there and not have to risk the treacherous journey here, not to mention the terribly prejudicial treatment at the hands of the racist natives of this country!
