Immigration Magic

Thomas Friedman writes in The New York Times
http://ow.ly/1pmnD
"Indeed, if you need any more convincing about the virtues of
immigration, just come to the Intel science finals. I am a pro-
immigration fanatic... Because when you mix all of these
energetic, high-aspiring people with a democratic system and free
markets, magic happens."

We welcome readers to share their opinion and ideas with us by

  1. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
One of the tweets in this issue mentions an article by Sandip Roy, a radio host in one of the western states, warning that an immigration "reform" bill with any chance of passing in this current climate might be so heavily enforcement oriented that it would only make the current situation worse. Both President Obama's recent statement on reform, and the Schumer/Graham article in the Washington Post last week lend credence to this very real fear.

This is especially true in the light of the fact that the Obama administration is taking so many actions against legal immigration by administrative fiat - witness the recent Neufeld memos - and is increasing deportations and workplace enforcement against illegal immigrants at a rapid pace, that it cannot be relied on to respond to the real interests of immigrants, legal or otherwise. Are Janet Napolitano and Donald Neufeld really the right people to be involved in White House input for immigration reform? What kind of reform will that be?

Suppose, for example, that Obama had issued an executive order of some kind purporting to direct insurance companies to deny coverage to people with preexisting conditions. Would anyone have believed him when he started to push for health care reform? That is the situation that he is in with regard to immigration now. If CIR fails to pass, as is very likely in this current anti-immigration climate, Obama will only have one more excuse to continue his current anti-immigrant policies administratively.
