  1. Roger Algase, Attorney at Law's Avatar
Karl Rove regrets that the Republicans didn't take the lead on immigration reform during the Bush years? Tell me another one. It is true that President Bush spoke out in favor of CIR in 2007, against many people in his own party, and he took a good deal of heat for it. He showed more courage in supporting immigration reform than President Obama has shown so far. Let us give credit where credit is due.

But where was Rove when Bush changed course after CIR crashed and burned in June, 2007? What did Rove do to try to stop the mass workplace raids, the deaths in immigration detention from medical neglect, the shameful ruling by Attorney General Mukasey that immigrants in deportation proceedings had no right to counsel (since reversed under Obama, one of the few good things about the new administration's immigration policy), the increases in deportations, the Social Security no-match letter fiasco and other anti-immigrant policies of the last two Bush years? Not very much.

But what was Rove actually doing during that period? Answer: He was pushing Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez to appoint federal prosecutors who would investigate or bring lawsuits against Latino voting registration groups. Unfortunately for the Republicans, Rove and Gonzalez were unable to stop enough Latinos from voting to prevent the Democrats from taking over the White House. But Rove and other Republican hypocrites like him may have the last laugh. Barack Obama is now doing everything he can to push Latino voters over to the Republicans.
