(a) Dear Editor:
Hopefully it will be more in the Christmas spirit if I
acknowledge that I did misread Honza Prchal's letter (12/22/09
ID). I realize now that his letter was expressing "rational
contempt" for unenforced immigration laws, not Mexican
immigrants. To that extent, I owe Mr. Prchal an apology. But I
still fail to see any difference between his letters' express and
implied slurs against Mexican immigrants as "less easy to
assimilate" and Benjamin Franklin's rants making the same
accusations against German-speaking immigrants more than 200
years ago. The idea that there can be objective measurements of
which immigrant groups are more likely to produce "'good
Americans" is as dangerous as it is false. In the 1950's, some of
my high school classmates were accusing me of being loyal to
Israel instead of America, simply because I was Jewish, even
though my family had been in America since the 19th Century.
There is barely a single ethnic group that has escaped being the
target of accusations from American nativists that its members
cannot assimilate. I am reminded of the satirical song from
Leonard Bernstein's "Candide": "I am easily assimilated". Merry
Christmas and Feliz Navidad to all.
