Marking The Calendar

The latest Reuben Navarette editorial says "By putting off the
immigration reform debate until the spring, Schumer puts it that
much closer to another Labor Day - Labor Day 2010 - when
lawmakers will be spending much of their time back home trying to
win re-election." For the full opinion, see here.

had fled."

6.  Headlines

(a) Election Results May Boost Immigration Reform in Congress

Viewed through the lens of the immigration issue, the overall
results of yesterday's elections might be called a mixed bag.
Republican gubernatorial candidates who promised more hardline
immigration stances won races in Virginia and New Jersey.

(b) Troubles In The Border Economy

Combining that issue with economic problems, however, puts
"Immigration Nation" communities in a unique and difficult spot.
Recovery here could be a long, hard road.

(c) Jersey City Fire Department Extinguishes Fire At Ellis Island

The last major fire to occur on the island took place on June 14,
1897.

(d) German Immigrants Hope Children Retain Heritage

Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, many of the
generation who came to the United States in the years after the
reunification of Germany are seeing their American-born children
begin to enter their preteen and teenage years.

(a) Dear Editor:
This is not unusual especially in Jewish Community to help one
another (11/09/09 ID comment). During the time when the Second
World War was on and the exodus of the Jes was going one I saw
how united this community was in Panama.  They arives with the
bare goods and the Jews in my Country established them in small
store so that they could survives and somehow they succeeded in
what was established for them.
