6.  Headlines

(a) Nobel Prizes Remind Us Why Immigration Matters

Four of those winners were born outside the US

(b) Report Critical Of Scope Of Immigration Detention

A report on immigration detention released Tuesday by the Obama
administration paints a picture of a costly, inappropriately
penal system that is growing without basic tools for management
and monitoring, while the government office nominally in charge
struggles with high turnover and a lack of expertise.

(c) Chomsky Daughter Compares Treatment Of Illegal Immigrants To
That Of Slaves

A college professor had harsh words Tuesday for the nation's
handling of immigration, drawing parallels to the treatment of
illegal immigrants with America's history of slavery.

(d) Knock, Knock: Census Workers Or Immigration Raid?

It's a crazy idea, an act of desperation, but it displays the
kind of courage sorely lacked by those Latino leaders who remain
deeply entrenched with the president and unwilling to admit that
on the crucial issues of immigration reform and census
participation, Obama has failed them.

300-words). Past correspondence is available in our archives
http://www.ilw.com/immigdaily/archives.shtm

(a) Dear Editor:
Regarding ID comment (10/07/09 ID): If ICE or CBP goes easy on
enforcement, can they still be effective? If they enforce the
harsh laws, and this is unappreciated. Change the law, but don't
blame them for doing their job.
Michael Steinberg

(b) Dear Editor:
Regarding ID comment (10/07/09 ID): As long as Sheriff Arpaio is
arresting criminals, and not just rousting Brown people, he's
doing his job. If he's looking for "illegals" to arrest just for
being illegals, he's going to be violating someone's
Constitutional right not to be the object of discrimination. He
would be abusing his office and his power, and that's just what
the Constitution is supposed to be protecting us from. When he
gets too arrogant to recognize this, he should be slapped into
his own pink prison. With budget crunches everywhere, one would
think that Sheriff Joe won't be wasting Maricopa County's
resources on Mexicans who are not committing any crimes.
John Shorkey

(c) Dear Editor:
Regarding ID comment (10/07/09 ID): God bless Sheriff Arpaio. We
need 287g in every community across the nation.
Chev
