**(a) Dear Editor:
**Authority figures, and ID is one, if only socially, ought to
**restrain themselves from branding their opponents un-American,
**criminals, racists and the like without very convincing evidence
**to back up their claims. K.W.E.'s letter (09/08/09 ID) is glad no
**one has been seriously injured in health-care debates thus far.
**Actually, some revved-up activist with Move. On bit a
**septuagenarian's finger off recently at a health-care debate.
**That's serious enough for me. Recent headlines indicate that
**Democrat Party leaders have decided they haven't been aggressive
**enough in their efforts to push health-care. I would hope that
**their aggression is a little less aggressive than the rhetoric
**that has brought us classics like "domestic terrorists", "evil-
**mongers" and the like over domestic policy debates. I remember
**the 1970s, and while the US was impressive enough for my family
**to move here despite the over-heated language increasingly on
**display in that decade, I do not remember the public tone very
**fondly. I urge us all to avoid blanked denunciations of illegal
**immigrants, people upset by illegal immigrants and the like. We
**are a nation with 350 million or so people in it. One can expect
**enough crack-pots in any debate to justify whatever stereotype
**one wants to draw about whichever idea one wishes to draw it
**about. That's fun, short-term, but loses in the long run.
**Populist Republicans learned that in the late 1920s when the worm
**turned and Democrats learned a similar lesson in the 1970s after
**decades of trying to psychoanalyze conservatives and classical
**liberals as people somehow wrong in the head and insinuating that
**they were dangerous loonies besides. I extend the invitation to
**ID loyal readers and letter writers both. One can be plenty
**scornful of someone else's arguments without demonizing him as a
**person or his ilk as a representative type.
