(a) 'Desktop' Immigration Raid Shakes Vernon Factory

A "desktop raid" is how the workers' representative, John M.
Grant, vice president of Local 770 of the United Food and
Commercial Workers International Union, described the scenario.

(b) Group Recommends Immigration Court Improvements

A national advocacy group recommended Wednesday improving the
country's beleaguered immigration court system by reforming how
judges are selected and promoting impartiality.

(c) Immigration Judge Grants Illegal Aliens 4th, 5th Amendment

The raid was just one of several carried out by ICE in June 2007
immediately following New Haven's approval of a city I.D. plan
aimed at helping undocumented workers open bank accounts.

(d) Immigrants Protest Need Of SS Number To Drive In PA

Immigration lawyers say that PennDOT's plan to yank licenses from
drivers without a valid Social Security number is unfairly
penalizing immigrants who got licenses in the past without a
Social Security card.

2009 ACIP Annual Symposium: June 15-18, 2009, Arlington, VA - For
thirty-five years, the American Council on International
Personnel's Symposium has been the most highly respected annual
meeting devoted exclusively to employment-based immigration. We
bring in-house immigration professionals from universities and
research institutions, non-profits, and multinational
corporations together with U.S. government representatives and
legal experts. This year's Symposium "Changing Times, Changing
Strategies" will help you: strategize and network in an uncertain
economy, meet new leaders of Federal Agencies & Congress, develop
airtight compliance measures, and refine your global mobility
management models. ILW.COM is
pleased to be an event media sponsor.

(a) Dear Editor:
To add one brief comment to my (06/12/09 ID) letter about the
Holocaust Museum shooting,  imagine what the outcry would have
been if the killer had been a Mexican, especially an illegal one,
instead of a native-born American who happened to be an admirer
of Adolf Hitler? Why do so many Americans foam at the mouth at
people who commit the crime of entering the US illegally while
being Hispanic, but pay so little attention to the right wing
hate groups whose members kill abortion doctors and racial
minorities almost at will, and who threaten to kill many more?
Why is it that our Department of Homeland Security is too busy
fining or investigating employers who hire immigrants and
building fences to nowhere along the Mexican border to track down
home-grown right wing terrorists and protect us from them?
Roger Algase, Esq. New York, NY

(b) Dear Editor:
Robert Yang's letter of 6/10/09 appears to be responding to an
insult or lashing out. My letter (06/10/09 ID) was trying to
gently mock his letter with the "God told me" talk at the end.
His letters are some of my favorites even when I disagree. As for
Mr. Algase's comment that bussing is all about race, it is, and
this country and its laws should not be. That is why I think
busing to have been a disastrous policy, especially in the
absence of de jure discrimination in places like Colorado and
Boston. Black children do not need to sit next to a white student
to learn. Students of all races need good teachers who hold them
to high standards, even if that teacher is of a different race.
Merit, measured as objectively as possible in our flawed and
fallen world is the only fair system, not spoils, not seniority
and certainly not race. Turning civil rights into a spoils system
(and not one aimed at benefiting students) shows us exactly where
the immigration system should not go (the world already has
Quebec, Malaysia, Belgium, Lebanon and former nations like
Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and others view people as groups, not
individuals). Race-neutral criteria are what we need, whether the
results are de facto unequal should be of no consequence in our
public policy - that's what the Civil War was about after all.
Honza Prchal, Esq. Birmingham, AL

(c) Dear Editor:
I just wanted to mention that Roger Algase, Esq., had a very good
ID week. His three letters to the Editor were very interesting
and thought provoking, and I wanted to give credit where credit
is due. Kudos to Mr. Algase.
Robert Gittelson
