Calling Our Friends

We rely on you, our readers and friends currently in Vegas, to
come meet with us at our Open House. We have four NEW books,
which we hope you will check out. But more than anything else, we
hope to shake your hand, learn how you are doing, and share with
you what's going on in our neck of the woods. Vegas is full of
things to do, but we are relying on our friends to remember to
make a visit to our Open House part of your program.  The Open
House is from 12noon to 10pm in Room 3701 (Level 3, Toscana) on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday (we are NOT in the exhibit hall).
We are raffling away many free immigration books for those of you
who fill out a short questionnaire giving us your views on
Immigration Daily. We are also offering a show-only discount for
all books published by us. And everyone gets a small box of
cookies from our youngest team-member, 6 year old Ms. Liberta
(named after the Statute of Liberty, but to see her, you must
come before bed-time!). Please come on over, and bring your
friends with you! Thank you!

We welcome readers to share their opinion and ideas with us by
writing to mailto:editor@ilw.com.

(a) Same-Gender Couples Fight For Immigration Rights

But all three said their hands were forced by federal immigration
laws that don't allow Americans to sponsor their foreign-born
same-sex partners for citizenship as a man may do for his wife or
a woman for her husband.

(b) Holder Overturns Bush Immigration Order

The elimination of the order could place a heavier burden on the
immigration court system because appeal processes would take more
time, Feere said.

(c) Immigration Debate Heats Up, Yet Stays Peaceful

"This has nothing to do with racism," he said. "This is strictly
about legal vs. illegal immigrants."

(d) Immigration Reformers Add 'Texting' to Toolbox

(a) Dear Editor:
The article "Gay Partner Language Could Doom Immigration Reform"
(06/04/09 ID) exposes the fact that not all parties lobbying for
CIR are truly "pro immigrant" or even "pro American".  For
whatever reasons, the Catholic church and others would support a
CIR bill which would benefit millions of illegals, but will have
nothing to do with the same bill if it also benefits a small
number of gay or lesbian US citizens.  There are only an
estimated 36,000 binational same-sex couples compared with over
12,000,000 illegals in the US.  The Uniting American Families Act
(UAFA), which would recognize same-sex partners and spouses as
being eligible for the same type of immigration benefits as
opposite-sex spouses, should be one of the least controversial
immigration reforms.  All of its beneficiaries would be US
citizens or legal immigrants.   UAFA also benefits US citizens in
other ways.  UAFA will allow US citizen parents to stay close to
their adult sons and daughters who, too often, are now choosing
to live outside the US so that they can be with their loved ones.
UAFA also allows the US government to continue collecting income
taxes from US citizens rather than having these income taxes paid
to the government of the country in which US citizens are exiled.
UAFA is not even particularly progressive legislation considering
that it just brings the US into line with 19 countries that
already have similar laws on the books, including all of the US
strongest allies, countries as diverse as Canada, Spain, Israel,
Brazil and South Africa.   UAFA should be seen as one of the most
pro-American of immigration bills.  Unfortunately, it seems that
many in the immigration battles are more anti-gay than they are
pro-American.
Ronald Matten, Esq.

(b) Dear Editor:
Christopher Basaman's letters' attempts (06/04/09 ID) to censor
my letters for pointing out the Republican party's indisputable
history of courting anti-Black and anti-Latino voters during the
past forty years are laughable. However, I do not argue that his
letters should not be published, merely because I disagree with
them, Mr. Basaman's letters would do well to show the same
tolerance for opposing viewpoints, instead of misrepresenting my
letters' statements and complaining when they are published.
Unless his letters can show convincingly that my letters'
statements about the Republicans' long and still ongoing history
of courting racist votes have no basis in fact, than his letters
certainly owe an apology, not so much to me personally, but to
everyone who cares about accuracy in the immigration debate.
However, even Mr. Basaman's biased and distorted letters are
models of reasoned discussion compared with the standard right
wing rantings of Peter G.'s letter (06/04/09 ID), which wants to
deport  millions of perfectly legal US citizens, whom it calls
"anchor babies", the latest in a large and rapidly growing
vocabulary of anti-Latino racial slurs to hit the dictionaries.
Roger Algase, Esq.  New York, NY

(c) Dear Editor:
The lazy US born citizens welfare suckers are just plain lazy
period. Good economy or bad economy they will be more happy to
suck welfare instead of washing dishes, busing tables etc. like
the "illegal" Chinese or Mexicans. Despite all the hardships and
mean treatments in this country, many of them still manage to
save money and send the remittance to their families back home,
please don't tell me any excuses that native born Americans can't
find decent jobs at all if not out of laziness, picky and take it
for granted attitudes. Look at our streets to find any lazy bumps
and ask them whether or not they're born here, I can bet you that
mostly they're Americans. With all due respect to Ms. Cogill's
letter (06/04/09 ID), yes foreigners take jobs from Americans,
legal or illegal immigrants or jobs move to their countries
instead, machines and computers take many manual jobs also from
Americans and yes, other Americans are happy to take jobs from
their fellow Americans, it's called competition.  Shall we make
the automation of jobs illegal as well, so self service online
reservation on our plane tickets, hotel rooms etc. are banned,
many more Americans can work to assist us in doing these
reservations again like the good old days ? But will anyone pay
the extra fees to pay these live agents then or complaining again
as usual ? Nothing should be illegal or unethical about
competition. Ones are subject to bid and ask process in this life
on Ebay, in hiring decision, shopping online or offline etc.
That's the fact of life, don't like it ? That's too bad about it.
Robert Yang

(d) Dear Editor:
I was watching CNN today and noted with some amusement the recent
gallop poll of GOP members who seem not suprisingly to be 89%
white. My family is mixed status in more than one way. Many of
them are non-white hispanics and some are not yet citizens. So in
the last year it became increasingly uncomfortable to be active
in the GOP since it was rare to attend a meeting where someone
didn't say something highly offensive regarding Hispanics or
Latino's and most commentators were egged on despite being
extremely ill informed on the specifics of Immigration Law and
the reasons for the surge in economic migration. Painting
Latino's with a broad brush or ignoring long standing family ties
and relationships with newer migrant families and ignoring the
contributions of the migrant workforce contributed to the failure
of the GOP to keep a large Latino base that shared many of its
values. Of the 22 hardliners on Immigration only 2 won elections
in November. If you are not a part of the solution you are
contributing to the problem. As I gazed out the window listening
to this nonsense I noted the group had no problem looking out the
country club window watching the dark skinned South American men
cutting the lawn, or being served by them in the room we sat in.
The "perception" that the base of the GOP is racist might be
incorrect but the reality that I witnessed.  was myself and only
one other member of our local party challenged any of the
speakers who were spewing lies, hate speech and misinformation.
