(a) Dear Editor:
The consular officer's description of quizzing visa applicants so
that he can catch them in any falsehood and deny entry or reveal
a misunderstanding in filling out their forms and allow them in
from the 27th and the May 29th story of the man without
fingerprints reminds me of the difficulty my wife had when her
work with caustic chemicals at her job (making medicines) and at
home (the woman hates stains in laundry) deprived her of
fingerprints. The INS agent (it was some time ago) was visibly
calmer after my wife answered two or three of his questions.
I'll bet that famously reserved Singaporeans might have a little
difficulty discussing such personal issues as hand foot peeling
that the story's Mr. S suffered from and likewise that the old-
fashioned hierarchical relationship with physicians more common
to East Asia than to patients in the United States made it
difficult for Mr. S to explain exactly why his fingerprints were
missing. That said, he was allowed in. All's well that ends well,
and he seems to be in remission so it ended even better than his
mere admission for a visit to the United States.
Honza Prchal, Esq.

(b) Dear Editor:
Anna Stacy's letter (05/29/09 ID) begins with a familiar rant
against "illegals", whom she wants to see deported, but then goes
on to attack President Obama's nomination to Judge Sonia
Sotomayor to the Supreme Court as an example of someone who would
"trade his country" for Latino votes. Judge Sotomayor is an
American, born in New York to Puerto Rican parents. Puerto
Ricans, who are clearly Latinos, are US citizens by birth. This
letter is only one of countless examples of people using the term
"'illegal" when they mean Latino. Yes, there are still a few
lawyers and other intellectuals out there who persist in
following the quaint, old-fashioned use of the word "illegal'' to
define people who have violated the immigration laws, rather than
as a racial code word. I respect them for their brave, but
doomed, attempt to preserve the purity of the English language.
Unfortunately, many more Americans are more concerned with
preserving  their bigoted idea of the "purity" of the white race
from the "'invasion"  of Latinos, including those who, like Judge
Sotomayor, had the nerve to make arrangements to be born in this
country to Spanish-speaking American parents. Not so long ago, in
the 1960's and 1970's, Puerto Ricans, even though they are
American citizens, were about as popular among whites here in New
York City as illegal Mexicans are today in California, Texas or
Arizona. The musical "West Side Story"' was not exactly about two
different groups of American citizens inspired by brotherly love
and mutual respect for each other. Ms. Stacy's letter should also
be reassuring to the Republican party. As long as there are
people around to rant and rave against all Latinos, including
those who are legal immigrants or US citizens, the Republicans
will always have a loyal, enthusiastic, base.
Roger Algase, Esq.                 New York, NY

(c) Dear Editor:
How to make something legal becomes illegal or legal becomes
illegal? Change the laws, easy. More states amended their laws to
allow gay marriage and many more will follow suit as many
understand the principle of equal rights for all and separation
of church and state, it's none of our business to take away the
rights of gays to make vow and legal lifetime loving commitments
to their partners to accomodate narrow minded and extreme views
of some religious fundamentalists. It's completely wrong and
hypocrite to make laws based on flawed and biased religious views
which as usual cherry pick verses of their "Holy Book" of
convenient when viewing on several issues. Why not making sex
before marriage and divorces as illegal as well? Sins are sins
and we can't cherry pick laws to justify our intolerance and
hatred toward those who don't share the same belief as ours. Same
thing with our and other nations on earth immigration laws should
be amended that foreigners or not should be free to move here and
there as they wish as long as they are self sufficient, of good
moral characters, sane, healthy and have no criminal records
anywhere and ones should be free to trade their labor, products
and services to any willing buyers without governments and
special interests trying to single them out to discourage
competition. Nations should barter or trade in neutral currency
back by commodities or gold and silver not by paper fiat
currency. I am not a globalist by promoting open border and free
trade for all, because open border existed centuries ago, it's
the selfish fews that made laws to justify their greed and
selfish interests for their own profits, benefits and convenient
by discriminating others to pursue liberty, prosperity and
happiness on this planet.
