(c) Dear Editor:
Maybe because we seem to be making some headway towards
immigration reform, I feel the urgency to oppose the Associated
Press guidelines in favor of using the terms "illegal" or
"illegal immigrant" in place of "undocumented.    One doesn't
have to be a Marshall McLuhan to realize (and I'm certain ID
readers all do already) that the "medium is the message" and when
folks read pejorative references such as those mentioned, it all
but precludes an objective consideration of the issues.  The fact
that immigrant advocacy groups all use the more correctly
descriptive term and that the offensive term is used almost
exclusively by anti-immigrant detractors (though they'll deny
that they are) should be reason enough to change the policy.  My
question is, how does one tackle this problem so as to achieve
results?  (There seems to be no logical reason why the guidelines
should be written in stone.)  I've written to  the head of the
Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern (who wholeheartedly
agrees with what I've written here), but haven't yet  had a
chance to speak by phone.  Suggestions from ID readers would be
most appreciated.
