1.  COMMENT

Recession Strategy

The days where an attorney could hang up his/her own shingle and
practice immigration law are long gone. Over the past several
years, the field of immigration law has seen consolidation as
market pressures force larger law firms to merge and/or acquire
in order to become national in scope and better service a global
clientele. Solo practitioners also find that an "of counsel"
relationship with a law firm helps them broaden the array of
practice areas that they can offer their clients. It is
increasingly rare to find a general immigration law firm.
Instead, immigration law firms find themselves specializing in a
specific practice area: family, business, removal, etc. The
downturn in the economy has exacerbated the pain already felt in
the field. Successful practice of immigration law requires
attorneys to have good command of substantive immigration law as
well as marketing ability.

Marketing is a long term initiative, and can be compared to
planting a field. One hopes that the seeds you plant today will
bear fruit in the future. A garden must be tended to in good and
bad weather alike. Similiarly, marketing efforts need to be
undertaken in good times and bad. Despite the slowdown in
business that almost all areas of immigration law are
experiencing (save removal and compliance), marketing should not
be viewed as a discretionary expense but rather an important and
necessary business expense. If you are a law firm that
understands the value of marketing and wishes to remain before
potential clients, consider placing an ad with us. ILW.COM has
200,000+ visitors each day. We offer a variety of advertising
options for law firms at different price points, to learn more
see here
http://www.ilw.com/corporate/advertise.shtm
or write to mailto:webmaster@ilw.com. A recession requires one to
work harder and smarter - let ILW.COM be your partner in helping
your law firm increase its standing among the immigrant
community.

We welcome readers to share their opinion and ideas with us by
writing to mailto:editor@ilw.com.
