6.  Headlines

(a) A Risky New Push For Immigration Legislation

Advocates of legalization have crafted a plan that could alienate
businesses and key Republicans, including Sen. John McCain. But
it is designed to lure a powerful new ally - organized labor.

(b) ICE Locks 'Em Up, Throws Away Key: Immigration Becomes A
Human Rights Scandal

"Immigrants, especially Latinos, have become the boogey man, the
new whipping boy," said Rosa Clemente, Amnesty's campaign
director for human rights.

(c) U.S. Deters Hiring Of Foreigners As Joblessness Grows

With the unemployment rate at 8.1% and approaching double
digits, the U.S. finds its longstanding quandary over
immigration growing even more difficult.

(d) Uneasiness Persists Over RI Immigration Order

But some residents of recession-battered Rhode Island - suffering
from one of the nation's highest unemployment rates, at 10.5
percent - wonder whether the order has done anything but stir up
angry rhetoric and add to the state's misery.

(a) Dear Editor:
Re letters of (03/27/09 ID): I smiled when I read Laurent's
letter's rendition of how he was "thrown to jail after my
american (sic) bonafide wife filed for divorce". Her side of the
story: "Hell hast no fury like a woman scorned," perhaps? Or
fraudulent marriage? No doubt conditions in the lockup were
deplorable. I wonder what was the underlying charge leading to
the arrest? Did Laurent hire a lawyer? Probably not, or his
letter may have bashed lawyers too, instead of asking us "people"
to "wake up" - but from what? Steven McKay's letter's horror
story of dark-skinned Guatamalans carded on buses finds it
"inexcusable" that authorities use racial profiling in detecting
illegal aliens. Well, yes, cows give milk. If you want milk, find
a cow. Get the analogy? Or do bleach-blondes with a heavy Brookyn
accent and a Jets jacket give milk? Sadly, profiling is sometimes
necessary. It is a matter of statistics who gets profiled. Since
when is it "major embarrassment for our country" to arrest
Guatemalans attempting to enter without a visa? Were they on a
bus? J. Smith's letter rails against the machine and, yup,
against lawyers. His letter laments that lawyers' letters
sometimes refer to "illegal immigrants". I agree - they should
not. "Illegal immigrant" is an oxyoron, as is "free inmate" -
something Laurant was not. One cannot be both "illegal" and an
"immigrant" at the same time. The correct term is "illegal
alien," because they are both. I have never heard of "pending
applications for tourist visas" in a context that would get
anyone arrested by the Border Patrol. Somewhere, perhaps, the
facts got a bit twisted? "Hey, officer, let me in," all eight
call from under the tarp of an old pickup truck in Tijuana, "I
have a tourist visa pending." Yeah, right.
David D. Murray, Esq. Newport Beach, CA

(b) Dear Editor:
What about US citizens Jailed without Justice? (03/26/09 ID
comment). Illegal immigrants using VAWA to their advantage of
gaining quick and guaranteed legal status. Marrying and setting
up male citizen spouse, claiming abuse, being arrested and
detained. How unjust is that? Disgusting and despicable and
scary.
