Nativist Lobby

The Huffington Post
reports "These supposedly independent groups - the Federation for
Immigration Reform (FAIR), the Center for Immigration Studies
(CIS) and NumbersUSA - enjoy a great degree of credibility among
the media and many prominent members of Congress. They shouldn't.
In reality, they are part of a network conceived by John Tanton,
a man who has been at the heart of the white nationalist movement
for decades.  The Southern Poverty Law Center has just released a
new report that examines the roots of these organizations and
their longstanding ties to racist extremists.  Our report, The
Nativist Lobby: Three Faces of Intolerance, describes how FAIR,
NumbersUSA and CIS were founded and funded by Tanton, a retired
Michigan ophthalmologist who operates a racist publishing company
and has written that to maintain American culture, "a European-
American majority" is required.  "

(a) The Top Three Anti-Immigration Groups Share Extremist Roots

A nasty web of racism lies behind three D.C. organizations that
work against immigration reform.

(b) Report - Immigration Enforcement Raised Quota, Raided Non-

Attorney Peter Markowitz says the memos show in 2006, ICE raised
its quota from 125 to 1,000 arrests per year for dozens of its
fugitive operation teams, and eliminated a requirement that 75
percent of those arrested be criminals.

(c) Gillibrand Backpedaling On Immigration

As a member of Congress, Kirsten Gillibrand voted in favor of
penalties for "sanctuary cities" like New York that don't enforce
immigration laws. But her ascension to the U.S. Senate has
miraculously inspired a change of heart.

(d) Obama's Labor Secretary Pick Backs Enforcement

President Obama's pick for secretary of labor, Rep. Hilda Solis,
could help shape a new approach to immigration control that
emphasizes the robust enforcement of labor laws.

Many letters to the Editor refer to past correspondence,
available in our archives.

(a) Dear Editor:
I agree with Maura Freedman's letter (2/5/09 ID). One could say
that our immigration system is sinking because it has run into an
ICE-berg of punitive enforcement. With regard the comment: "Heil
Hitler" in Jim Roberts' letter (2/5/09 ID), I am not sure exactly
what that is supposed to mean, unless it is intended to sum up
the letter's views on immigration and a multi-ethnic society.
Roger Algase, Esq.
New York, NY

(b) Dear Editor:
In her zeal to provide "decent and humane treatment of the
undocumented in our midst ..." Maura Freedman's letter (2/5/09
ID) seems to forget that the "undocumented" do not have a ticket
to board the ship.  It is not that they are second class, it's
that they have no cabin under the law, yet seek a birth on the
ship of state without fair recompense to the shipping company,
demanding lifeboats the same as would be provided a paying
passenger.  As I have said many times, (with the exception of
refugees and asylum) illegal immigration should not be a
humanitarian issue, or an issue of compassion, it is not about
"innocents," it is about law and respect for the laws of a
sovereign nation. A category of persons repeatedly failing to
obey the laws of a nation is tantamount to anarchy. Like Rodney
Dangerfield, "We just don't get no respect." Perhaps it is time
to respect the rule of law before demanding respect for those who
violate it.
David D. Murray, Esq.
Newport Beach, CA

(c) Dear Editor:
Our economy mess is not created by illegal immigration but by the
fraud, manipulation and greed in the Wall Street and reckless
government spendings particularly on expensive wars for special
interests' profits and benefits and unfunded welfare entitlements
such as social security which is actually a ponzi scheme itself
and no restrictionists dare to admit the truth here.
Restrictionists love to point out some billions dollar of
"change" welfare for illegal immigrants but say none of hundreds
of billions dollar of corparate welfare and bailouts for Wall St.
fat cats and not to mention all other lazy US citizens who love
to milk welfare as well instead of working while it's possible.
Restrictionists are hypocrites by supporting double standard on
immigration. The past immigration was justified because it was of
their ancestors' benefits. Seeking freedom, prosperity, happiness
and better economic opportunities were OK if ones did it
centuries ago and have white skin color and of Anglo Saxon origin
but not of Chinese or Asian ones, and absolutely not of today
immigrants legal or not say anti immigration die hard. Shame!
Robert Yang

(d) Dear Editor:
Lawerence's letter's comments (2/5/09 ID) on E-Verify are
precisely correct. Its almost like wishing a pox on the house of
those in favor of harrassing certain alien families. I almost
look forward to hearing the outcries of the innocent US citizens
who get chewed to pieces by this system. I think more American
citizens should have the opportunity to interact with hostile
unforgiving agencies. Spread the misery around. Until your life
has been destroyed by US government law, regulation or policy its
hard to appreciate the value of living in the "greatest country
on earth".
Maura Freedman

(e) Dear Editor:
While the R. Algase letter (2/5/09 ID) states that the term
"illegal alien" is: "a term to be found nowhere in the
immigration laws", to the contrary, it is found in numerous
places including, USC, Title 8, 1365 - Costs of incarcerating
illegal aliens and USC, Title 8, 1252c - Authority of Local law
enforcement officials to arrest and detain certain illegal
aliens. If I understand the  letter's position on the 14th Amd.
correctly, it is that those born here are both citizens and
natural born.  But even if Obama was born in Hawaii (and it has
not been proven that he was), the framers of the Constitution
clearly distinguished between the two as the time of their birth,
they were also British Citizens and is why they declared that,
while they were citizens of the US, they themselves were not
"natural born citizens". Hence, their inclusion of the
grandfather clause in Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 of the
Constitution:  "No person except a natural born citizen, or a
citizen of the U.S., at the time of the adoption of this
Constitution shall be eligible to the Office of President.  As a
Kenyan native, BO, Sr. was also a British subject whose
citizenship status (and his childrens) were governed by The
British Nationality Act of 1948. Thus, even under the liberal
interpretation of the 14th Amd. (which needs changing), only the
title of "citizen" is bestowed, not "natural born citizen".  It
is the latter that is required to be US President under Article
II, Sec. 1 which then provides that: "Inability to discharge the
duties and powers, the same shall devolve on the Vice President
and the Congress may by law provide for the case of removal".
