Bloggings: One Republican Leader Talks Sense About Immigration Reform, While Others Try To Kill CIR With "Obamacare" Poison Pills. By Roger Algase

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) a key member of the Senate Gang of Eight (GOE), continued this weekend to stand up to the Neanderthals in his own party who are addicted to putting bigotry against Latino and other brown immigrants ahead of concern for America, or even the future of the GOP itself.

The Guardian quotes Graham as making the following statement on NBC's Meet the Press (Blocking immigration bill would doom 2016 hopes, says leading Republican, June 16):

"But if we don't pass immigration reform, if we don't get it off the table in a reasonable, practical way, it doesn't matter who you run in 2016. We're in a demographic death spiral as a party and the only way we can get back in good graces with the Hispanic community in my view is to pass comprehensive immigration reform."

Will the Republlcan party listen to this wise voice of reason and tolerance?

Or will it go the way of Ann Coulter, who wrote on June 12 that the GOP "deserves to die" if it embraces immigration reform?

Will the Reublicans also follow another rabid immigrant-hater, Michele Bachmann (Politico, June 14: Michele Bachmann: Far right 'losing badly'")?

One sign that anti-immigrant Republicans would rather play games with CIR poison pills is their attempt to use the Affordable Care Act as a wedge to destroy CIR.

The Washington Post reports the following in its June 16 article Republicans trying to use health-care law to derail Obama's immigration reform efforts:

"Conservatives in both chambers of Congress are insisting on measures that would expand the denial of public benefits to the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants beyond limits set in a comprehensive reform bill pending in the Senate."

                                **********

"The insertion of the politics of health-care reform - one of the most polarizing issues in Washington - threatens to split open the emerging bipartisan coalitions that are crucial to passing a bill."

Here is the link to the full article:

The focus of this battle is a Republican attempt to include a mandate in CIR which would require unauthorized immigrants to purchase their own health insurance, without the benefit of federal subsidies available to others.

As the Wshington Post reports, this would pose an insurmountable burden because of the high premiums.

How much longer will anti-immigrant Republicans continue to play political games with the lives of 11 million people in a last ditch attempt to kill CIR? Will these tactics succeed?
