Number of Asian Immigrants surpasses the number of Hispanic Immigrants

Rate this Entry

Generally, when discussing immigration to the US, most people focus on those coming from Central and South America, specifically Mexico.  Many people focus on border security between the US and Mexico.  However, new statistics show that, since 2010 that the number of new immigrants from Asia has surpased the number of new immigrants who are hispanic.

Overall, 36% of all new immigrants in 2010 were Asians compared with 31% for Hispanics.  Just a decade ago, Hispanics accounted for 59% of immigrants and Asians for just 19%.  This is quite a dramatic change and shift in our immgiration.  For clarification purposes it should be noted that the label "Asian-American" includes those from China, Japan, Korea, Phillipines, Vietnam and India, among other countries, so it is a very diverse group in and of itself.

While there has been much written about this, and the differences between Aisian populations and other populations, the most important issue, in my mind, is the effect this should have on the immigration debate.  For to long the emphasis has always been on illegal immigration and increasing immigration from Central and South America.  Hopefully this will show people that this is actually a wider debate that affects many more Americans than they thought.  Hopefullyh it will awaken politicians as well to the benfits that they can get in helping to fix our immigration system and making it more fair and equitable.  It is important for politicans to know that their is a changing face of immigration and that they cannot just contine to try and bash immigrants without political backlash.  They can no longer use illegal immigration as an excuse to abandon all reform of our immigration laws. Hopefully we will finally see some action on immigration reform that will help all groups of immigrants and the US economy and welfare as a whole.
