Bloggings: More about Pete Hoekstra's racist anti-Asian ad, by Roger Algase

Rate this Entry

In my February 7 blogging, I wrote that Michigan Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow had failed to condemn an openly racist ad by one of her Republican opponents, Pete Hoekstra, featuring a Chinese woman thanking Stabenow in broken English for allegeldly helping to ship American jobs to China. (Hoekstra's ad was not only racist but false - Stabenow has been a supporter of tough trade policies toward China.)

I have since learned that, according to the Huffington Post, Stabenow has in fact condemned Hoekstra's ad as offensive and "appalling", so my previous comment needs to be corrected. However, according to another Internet report, Michigan Democrats used the "jobs to China" issue against the Republicans during a 2006 election campaign in a way that also included anti-Asian racial overtones.

Certainly, with regard to appealing to white voters in connection with the immigration issue, prejudice rears its head on both sides of the aisle. President Obama's mass deportations, his "Secure Communities", high RFE and petition denial rates for skilled workers, fishing expedition investigations of employers hiring legal H-1B employees, and slow progress in implementing his "prosecutorial discretion" initiative all attest to the fact that using minority immigrants as political scapegoats is not limited to the Republicans.
