Alabama House of Representatives Passes Arizona-Style Immigration Law

Rate this Entry

Reuters has reported that last night the Alabama state House of Representative passed an Arizona-style immigration law by a vote of 73 votes to 28.  The law will enable Alabama state and local police authority to check the immigration status of individuals that are being detained for suspected commission of other crimes.

The law will also require Alabama businesses to run verify employment eligibility of new employees through the federal "E-verify" database, and use a State verification program prior to providing public services to undocumented immigrants.

The bill must now pass the Alabama Senate before it may be signed into law.
