Matthew Kolken on Deportation And Removal

New Report: The consequences of losing a lawful immigrant parent to deportation

Rate this Entry

A new report issued by a collaboration of the law schools UC Berkeley and UC Davis addresses the impact of the deportation of a lawful permanent resident parent on their United States citizen child.  The report is entitled:  In the Child's Best Interest?, and examines data collected from the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S.
Census.

The report estimates that from 1997 to 2007 over 88,000 U.S. citizen children have lost
a Green Card holding parent to deportation, and almost 50% of these children were under 5 when their parent
was taken from them.  The psychological damage to the child is unmeasurable.

When President Obama was campaigning he promised to put an end to this practice.  In stark contrast to his lofty campaign rhetoric, his actions as President tell a different story: he deports on average 1,000 immigrants per day in office.

Shame on you Mr. President.  Shame on you.
