Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

Happy Birthday, DACA!

Rate this Entry
One year ago, the Obama Administration reversed course and launched the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program. The White House had publicly stated for months that it lacked the power to provide young people who likely would qualify for the DREAM Act administrative relief from deportation and allow them to work legally in the US. Fortunately, they were able to shift from this view and support the legal scholarship that explained why they had the power to create the DACA program.

Today, more than 400,000 people have benefited from the program. DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano was right when she said this week that DACA is not a long term solution and we need real reform. But it was an important move in the right direction that has helped many, many people start to have a normal life with hope for a good future.

Alternet has a story that profiles some of the success stories from DACA and it puts a human face on the program that reminds us why the fight for immigration reform is so important.
