Goodlatte Floats Idea of Watered Down DREAM Bill

Rate this Entry
I have to say that after hearing a lot of things I liked lately from Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), this is disappointing. Goodlatte is now saying that the only benefit DREAMers should get is the ability to pursue green cards through labor certifications filed by employers. That's a terrible idea. It will make immigration lawyers wealthy (I'm allowed to say that since I am one). But I'm pretty sure most of us would still agree that this is a bad idea.

First, the existing system for employer sponsorship is a disaster and so burdensome on employers, that it's safe to assume that a high percentage of them are not going to want to go through this expensive and time-******* process.

Second, a lot of DREAMers would like to attend college. Many are full-time moms (and dads).

Third, the point of the DREAM Act was that these kids were already Americanized and as they did not choose to be here, they shouldn't be treated the same way as prospective immigrants. So Goodlatte saying that the DREAMers need to be treated the same as all the rest of the folks currently out of status doesn't make a lot of sense.

If the DREAM Act were put up for a vote today, I'm betting it would easily pass in both Houses. The politics have changed a lot over the last year and there's no need to dramatically scale back the proposal. Hopefully, today's remarks were just a trial balloon being floated by Goodlatte and the KIDS Act he's working on will be better.
