Education Secretary: Colleges Should Offer Lower Tuition to DREAMers

Rate this Entry
One of the unfortunate benefits NOT automatically available to DACA recipients is in state tuition at state universities. Several states are offering this to DACA beneficiaries, but many do not. This is really unfortunate as it is a tremendous waste of talent. It's looking pretty likely that the DREAMers are going to eventually get citizenship. So to deny them a higher education is bad for all of us. US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan addressed this problem recently in Arizona. Hopefully, every state will move to do the right thing.

Why only for Dreamers? Why not the facility of in-state tuition for kids of people legally on H1? Some of these people have lived in the same location for more than a decade (those stuck in the backlogs and cannot apply AOS because their PDs are not current), but are still paying out of state tuition to educate their kids???

BTW, this is not the first time this has happened. During DACA, the dreamers got work permits, but not H4 kids of people legally here on H1 stuck in limbo.

    Hypocrisy much??

RRR. you are 100% correct, I could not agree more. Governments -- both federal and state -- are going out of their way to accommodate and provide benefits to undocumented aliens -- and at the same time ignore and even penalize legal aliens who put in the effort, time, money to maintain their legal immigration status and follow the law -- do the right thing. It seems that more and more in the U.S. fairness, justice, the rule of law with regards to immigration is not important and does not matter.
