Gutierrez: Obama Should Stop Deportations if Congress Won't Move an Immigration Bill

Rate this Entry
For Republicans who think that blocking immigration means the status quo will continue, Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) is urging President Obama to consider playing a card that is in his hand - stopping the deportation of all non-criminal illegally present immigrants in the US.

From The Hill:

President Obama "has the responsibility" to stop deportations of illegal immigrants if Congress proves unable to pass a comprehensive immigration bill, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) argued in an interview published Friday.

"There are devastating effects if the Congress of the United States cannot enact comprehensive immigration reform then the president of the United States has the responsibility to act to defend those immigrants which he says he wants to provide safety and justice for," Gutierrez told Salon.

President Obama has suggested he lacks that authority. But legal scholars disagree and the President has already changed his position when it comes to younger illegally present immigrants. And given that 15 months have passed since the DACA program began without a successful legal challenge and with the decision to implement DACA proving to be a clear winner for the President, it's easy to see him looking to go down this road again.

Follow the money. When Debbie Wasserman Schultz supports the building of a South Florida detention center in her district you know there is a little pay to play going on. Congress didn't set a bed mandate because they thought it was a good idea to detain parents of citizens.

I wonder how much money has been donated to Obama and various members of Congress from Correction Corporations of America.
