Ann Coulter Offers GOP More Racist Opposition to Immigration Reform. By Roger Algase

Rating: 22 votes, 4.82 average.

We can always be grateful to Ann Coulter for her relentless efforts to highlight the racist attitudes which are at the heart of Republican opposition to immigration reform.

Rex W. Huppke of the Chicago Tribune reports that while the Republicans were meeting for their annual retreat (which produced the already useless immigration "Standards" that subsequent developments show to have been nothing more than propaganda), Ann Coulter weighed in with a 900-word anti-reform memo called "GOP Crafts Plan to Wreck the Country, Lose Voters"

See Coulter suggests the GOP forget immigration reform, (February 4).

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/c...,6993950.story

According to this report, Coulter's reasons for opposing reform included the following:

*"81 per cent of native-born citizens think that the schools should teach students to be proud of being American. Only 50 per cent of naturalized U.S, citizens do."

*"Only 40 per cent of the general public holds a favorable opinion of Obamacare, 42 per cent unfavorable. Meanwhile 51 percent of Asians have a favorable opinion of Obamacare, 18 percent an unfavorable one. Even Koreans support Obamacare by 57 percent to 17 percent."
(Emphasis added.)

*"Only 35 percent of native-born Americans support affirmative action, compared to 58 percent of immigrants. including - amazingly - 64 percent of Asians (suggesting that they may not be as smart as everyone thinks)." (Emphasis added)

The bigotry in Coulter's above comments is simply mind-boggling. Notice that her hate is not specifically directed at immigrants who are in this country without legal status or have otherwise broken the law in any way. Rather, in the classic racist tradition, it is directed against people based on their ethnicity and country of birth, including US citizens.

This includes creating fantasy distinctions among people of various backgrounds, such as in her implication that "even" Koreans are not American enough, though they are supposedly (according to Coulter) "more" American than other Asians, because Korean immigrants allegedly also disagree with Coulter's right wing views about health care.

But wait! There is more. According to the above article, Coulter's conclusion is that immigrants hate all things that Republicans love: "support for small government, gun rights, patriotism, the Constitution and capitalism".

Huppke's article concludes:

"Ann Coulter, as always, is right. Which is good, because if the GOP listens to her. she may soon be the only Republican left."

But there is only one problem: the Republicans are listening to her, and to other bigoted right wing fanatics like her. This is why we do not now have immigration reform.

Immigration advocates need to pay more attention to reality and come to terms with the powerful influence of racism and bigotry against immigrants and virtually all other minorities within the GOP, instead of remaining in denial and making up endless excuses for Republican obstruction.

Otherwise, we might not have immigration reform any time in the near future.
