States Stepping In to Move Normalize Immigrants' Status

Rate this Entry
It's interesting that on a number of issues where public opinion is in one place and Congress is paralyzed, state legislatures, governors and the courts are filling the void. We're seeing this on marijuana laws, gay marriage and, yes, immigration. It seems like everyday, we're hearing about states changing laws on access to in state tuition and financial aid, police cooperation with ICE, drivers licenses regardless of status and more. Just today there was news of Florida getting close to changing the law on tuition and Washington state moving legislation to allow out of status immigrants access to financial aid. And even in my conservative state of Tennessee, two Republican House members, introduced legislation this week to bring tuition equality to my state. Hopefully, members of Congress are paying attention.
