Christie Appointment Bad News For Immigration Reform

Rating: 4 votes, 5.00 average.

Don't count on the support of Jeffrey Chiesa, the NJ Attorney General just appointed by Chris Christie to fill the late Senator Frank Lautenberg's seat.

Politico is reporting that he's already stated he supports the right wing view that a legalization program will need to happen after a border crackdown.

I fail to understand why advocates are opposed to securing the border as a precondition to legalization.

Allowing someone as old as Frank to continue as US Senator was bad news for democracy. Everything else that happens as a result of his death is a downstream effect.

This is what will happen if the greedy geezer Ruth Bader Ginsberg hangs on until the 2017 elections...more serious problem than the Christie appointment.

My view of democracy is a little different than yours. Ultimately, folks get the government they desire, so imposing age/race/citizenship criteria is undemocratic. If voters want to elect someone who is 18 or 85 or a non-US citizen, why shouldn't they be able to? This is not really a radical concept. For instance, in good old England, you don't have to be a UK citizen to be a MP, merely a Commonwealth citizen. If the voters feel an Australian or Indian National will be a good MP then they have the right to vote for him. See link and cite below:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_of_Parliament

"A candidate to become a member of parliament must be a British or Irish or Commonwealth citizen, must be over 18, and must not be a public official or officeholder, as set out in the schedule to the Electoral Administration Act 2006[9] (this was a reduction in the lower age limit, as candidates needed to be 21 until the law came into effect in 2006)."

"Everything else that happens as a result of his death is a downstream effect."

There is unlikely to be much of a downstream effect. There is likely to be a Democrat elected in October. Christie, is so afraid of a massive Democrat turnout that he is has set the special election on a separate date from his own re-election date. See below:

A little different, than the above situation. So, yes, I agree, that Justice Ginsberg should let a Democratic President & Senate pick her replacement.

No, I'm not advocating imposing age limits. I think it's rather sad that the voters thought that they had to pick an 84 year old guy who could die in office to represent their best interests.
