Study: Immigrants Contributing More to Medicare Than They're Receiving

Rate this Entry

Well, that doesn't exactly fit the antis narrative. From the NY Times:

Immigrants
have contributed billions of dollars more to Medicare in recent years than the
program has paid out on their behalf, according to a new study, a pattern that
goes against the notion that immigrants are a drain on federal health care
spending.

The study,
led by researchers at Harvard Medical School, measured immigrants'
contributions to the part of Medicare that pays for hospital care, a trust fund
that accounts for nearly half of the federal program's revenue. It found that
immigrants generated surpluses totaling $115 billion from 2002 to 2009. In
comparison, the American-born population incurred a deficit of $28 billion over
the same period.

The findings shed light on what demographers have long known:
Immigrants are crucial in balancing the age structure of American society,
providing an infusion of young, working-age adults who support the country's
aging population and help cover the costs of Medicare and Social Security. And
with the largest generation in the United States, the baby boomers, now starting
to retire, the financial help from immigrants has never been more needed,
experts said.

To the contrary, it fits the Robert Rector narrative perfectly. If a low income unlawfully present alien paying Medicare tax is made eligible for benefits by CIR, he will be a net receiver of benefits and thus put strain on that system. Once again, biased articles on benefits conveniently forget that people presently paying into a system which they do not currently receive benefits from someday become eligible for benefits themselves. So much for the free lunch. If there is a free lunch it would be when money is paid in but not received back. From a fiscal standpoint, that's actually a case for not legalizing people.

    Jack where are you from?
Apparently your ignorance is so gruesome that doesn't allow you to visualize that Medicare is an UNFOUNDED LIABILITY...get some decent education by going to college if you were born in this country (and if you are a legal resident or a naturalized citizen shame on your idiocy).

Jack, None of the EB immigrants receive any Medicare benefits unless they are citizens, SS is only after contributing for 10 yrs. Would you support a change (based your e.g. about the free lunch) about allowing all EB applicants to defer Medicare contributions until they become USC's.
