Summary of Day's Amendments to Senate Bill 744 - 5/21/2013

Rating: 3 votes, 5.00 average.

And here are the final committee amendments to S. 744. The big news today was the agreement to Senator Hatch's demands on H-1B changes (and some surprise additional language in that amendment on green cards) as well as Senator Leahy's decision not to jeopardize the bill by voting on same sex marriage provisions.

Not surprised that once again the LGBT community has been thrown under the bus as a result of Republican threats. Hopefully the Supreme Court will strike down DOMA.

Even more funny is when some in the GOP speak about how we need to train more Americans instead of depending on skilled immigrants and an hour later they show up in the budget committee to deeply cut education spending. Makes sense doesn't it.

Greg, thanks for the timely updates on CIR. What is the immediate effect of the passage of the CIR on EB backlogs. Would all categories become current, would everyone with approved I 140's be able to file for the I 485 irrespective of the PD. CIR seems to be headed for a vote on the Senate floor. When do you think CIR could signed into law?

Hi Matt - I'm planning on writing up a summary of effective dates - when each part of the bill becomes effective.

Thanks Greg, am looking forward to that helpful info.

Greg, thanks for the updates, much appreciated. If the bill were to pass this year when would the new H-1B visa numbers kick in? also is the 20+5k advanced degree H-1b increase only for STEM US masters or all US masters? there was some confusion floating around on that
