Re: August 31 - Americans Oppose Cutting Legal Immigration
Yes. But should they have the complete data set too?
Huffington Post reports on September 1 that more than half of all Republicans, 54 per cent, think that President Obama is a Muslim, and that a plurality of Republicans, 44 per cent, think that he was born outside the United States. The percentages of Republicans who believe in these two lies, which have been disproved again and again and have no foundation in reality whatsoever, is even higher. See, A Majority of Republicans believe that Obama is a Muslim.
A political party with such a high percentage of members who believe in this kind of fantasy is all too easily becoming the captive of members with other false and irrational beliefs, especially about immigrants and immigration policy. These anti-immigrant lies are too common and too numrous to be listed here, but they range from the flasehood that most Mexican immigrants are "criminals" and "rapists" to the equally delusional and maliciously propagated lie that birthright citizenship is not protected by the Constitution and is bad for America,
In Europe there was once a party that came to power by piling lie upon lie, especially about the Jews, that ultimately let to unimaginable horror and catastrophe, namely the attempt to erase an entire people from the face of the earth. The party was known as the National Socialist German Workers Party, and was responsible for a war which took the lives of 60 million people. It was able to to this because its members were so ready to believe absurd, fantastic impossible lies about the people and groups it opposed.
Are we seeing the beginning of something similar in America today?
Is America starting to repeat history by giving power to a political party whose members are so ready to believe falsehoods being spread out of anti-immigrant hate, beginning with the lie that America's first African-American president is not an American at all, but is in this country through fraud and lying about his birth (and religion)? We should be very concerned about where a party with so many supporters who believe these vicious lies about the president, and about immigrants in general, is taking us.
