House Speaker Paul Ryan Injects Reality Into Immigration Debate. By Roger Algase

Rate this Entry
Newly elected House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), who was chosen despite right-wing reservations over his previous record of supporting immigration reform, has given an early indication that he is not about to abandon his previous principles of commitment to reality on this issue. According to a November 15 report in the Huffington Post, Ryan said on the following on CBS's "60 Minutes" on Sunday:

"It starts with border enforcement...It starts with enforcing the rule of law. But you need to have a vibrant, legal immigration system. Legal immigration is America. I think you could have a pathway to legal status. Earn your way to legal status, but not to citizenship."

With regard to Donald Trump's call for mass deportation, Ryan said:

"I can't imagine how it could happen."

Compared to the statements about immigration that have been coming out of the Republican presidential debates, Ryan's remarks are a refreshing acceptance of reality, not Donald Trump's fantasy of a border wall, a storm trooper style "deportation force" and forced expulsion of 12 million people, a fantasy which few if any of the other Republican presidential candidates have had the courage to oppose.

The Republicans could do a lot worse than nominating Paul Ryan for president. At least he is willing to talk about immigration seriously.
