Israeli Newspaper Compares Syrian Refugees to Jewish Refugees. By Roger Algase

Rate this Entry
Some opponents of letting Syrian refugees into the US point to the fact that the Israeli government refuses to let any into Israel, a tiny nation with only a fraction of the population of America, a nation which is still at war with Syria as well as struggling to come to terms with its own Palestinian minority, and whose prime minister has unequivocally condemned Donald Trump's call to bar all Muslims from America.

However, not all Israelis are unsympathetic to the plight of Syrian refugees or believe that they should be denied entry into countries that are able to accept them, such as the US. An Israeli journalist, Chemi Shalev, writing in the leading newspaper Haaretz, argues that Syrian refugees are just as much victims of irrational prejudice in America today as Jewish refugees were in the 1930's.

See: For U.S. Jews, a Double-edged Holocaust precedent to Syrian Refugee Clash (November 19)

http://www.haaretz.com/opinion/.premium-1.687006

First, in good debating style, Shalev lays out the Jewish case in favor of refusing to accept Syrian refugees in America before refuting it, as follows:

"'There is a big difference between Jews seeking refuge then and the Syrian Muslims seeking it now,' blogger Harry Maryles wrote in an article published in the right wing Jewish Press, in an effort to explain how a Jew whose parents survived the Holocaust could join the restrictionists. 'Not a single subset of the Jewish people threatened the world with take-over under a califate...No segment of Jewry was beheading infidels. No Jew ever blew himself up in a suicide attack. There was not a single Jew that wanted anything more than refuge in a safe country.'"

Shalev answers:

"But that's easy to say now; it's not what most Americans believed at the time. Even as the Nazi campaign against German and Austrian Jews reached fever pitch, Congressman Lewis McFadden, Republican of Pennsylvania, still claimed that Jewish refugees were part of a plot to instill a 'Jewish Communist Regime' in America...Senator Robert Reynolds, Democrat of North Carolina, wondered whether Jews would have been forced out of their lands 'if they had not impoverished those lands od it they had not conspired against their governments".

Note: In implying that there were no Jewish terrorists, Harry Maryles seem to have conveniently forgotten about Menachem Begin, later to become an Israeli prime minister and Nobel Peace Prize winner, who began his career as the leader of the anti-British terrorist group Irgun Zvai Leumi in the 1930's in what was then Palestine.

Among other attacks, Bagin was responsible for blowing up part of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, killing almost 100 people, and, a few years later, for massacring 100 Palestinian civilians at the village of Deir Yassin.

I personally heard Begin boast about this massacre in a speech that he gave at a Cambridge, Mass. area synagogue in 1958 or 1959, which I attended.

To be continued.

Good thing that Israel have made a firm decision not to take a single Syrian refugee. Once you do that, you can publish all kind of articles in the papers. No Syrian refugees - period, that is the decision people of Israel have made. They surely do have much smart and patriotic administration! My congratulations to people of Israel!
