Matthew Kolken on Deportation And Removal

Obama Already Implementing Trump Muslim Immigration Plan

Rate this Entry
Via ThinkProgress.com:

Anywhere between 70 and 100 immigrant detainees seeking asylum from political violence in the United States were deported back to India, Bangladesh, and Nepal on Sunday night, according to Fahd Ahmed, the executive director of the immigrant advocacy group Desis Rising Up & Moving (DRUM). Ahmed said that the majority of the Bangladeshi detainees are Muslim, and about half of the other deported detainees are Sikh.

Because of their religious and political beliefs, being forced to return to their home countries could mean harsh treatment or even death for some these asylum seekers. Bangladeshis are especially at risk of danger if they’re affiliated with the opposition party. In India, Sikhs are vulnerable to the growing unrest and violence in the Punjab region.

The article quotes Ahmed: “The reality is that the current administration has been implementing those policies already for keeping those immigrants out and setting higher standards for both South Asian immigrants and Muslim immigrants... From our perspective, it’s actually the practice of such policies which set the tone for anti-Muslim or anti-immigrant sentiments to rise. Because it provides a stamp of legitimacy to that sort of bigotry.”

Maybe it is time Democrats stop worrying about what a hypothetical Trump Presidency would look like, and turn their attention to what the Obama administration continues to do to Muslims with impunity.

Wishful thinking.

Matt is right. A Trump presidency could not be much worse - except for the fact that immigration advocates and any other people who write and publish comments about these abuses might very possibly wind up in jail and face torture.

Other than for that detail, I would agree that we should only focus on what is going on now and not worry too much about what things would be like if Donald takes power.

The Guardian also has an excellent and accurate description of Trump in an April 8 article by Owen Jones. Here are a couple of quotes:

"Donald Trump is a monster nurtured by the US political establishment: on the one hand, the anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant bigotry stoked by the Republican elite and their media mouthpieces for years...

Trump's unapologetic embrace of racism, xenophobia and misogyny vindicates these prejudices the world over...There is, after all, another United States, one forged by immigrants and transformed by courageous Americans who fought racism, sexism and homophobia. That is a United States millions of us believe in."

There has been so much equivocating, meaningless nonsense written about Trump in the US media attempting to divert attention away from his embrace of anti-immigrant racism, bigotry, violence, torture and intimidation as foundations of his policy proposals, and to pretend that there are other threats to our immigration system and our democracy equally dangerous to his, that it is refreshing to hear a voice from across the Atlantic stating the plain truth about Donald Trump:

He is a danger to American values, and to America's democracy, greater than any other that this country has faced in its modern history.

To paraphrase the famous battle cry that Cato used in support of Rome's fight against its ancient enemy, Carthage: Delenda est Karthago, ("Carthage must be destroyed."), I would suggest:

    Vincendus est Donald Trump.
    ("Donald Trump must be defeated".)

That is the first, and most essential, recipe for preventing Trump's brand of anti-immigrant racism from turning America into a full-blown fascist dictatorship.

Note: The above should not be taken as a defense of any of the Obama administration's bigoted and authoritarian deportation actions that Matt is writing about so eloquently.

Many dramas have curtain-raisers; many operas have preludes. Obama's deportations of 100 or so Muslim and other immigrants from South Asia (including Nepal - a Buddhist country, not a Muslim one) could turn out to be the curtain raisers or preludes to the incarceration and deportation of millions of Asian, Latino and black immigrants under a regime of anti-immigrant terror with one-man rule by a strongman, President for Life, Donald Trump.
