Trump Hits New Low In Attacking Parents of Slain Muslim US Soldier. Roger Algase

Update, August 1, 4:30 am:

Here are some excerpts from the reply of Ghazala Khan, an immigrant from Pakistan and a Gold Star mother, to Donald Trump's insulting comment about her decision not to speak while standing next to her immigrant husband at the Democratic National Convention during his speech about the ultimate sacrifice of their son, Humayun Khan, who came to America with his parents when he was 2 yeas old:

"Donald Trump has asked why I did not speak at the Democratic Convention. He said he would like to hear from me. Here is my answer to Donald Trump: Because without saying a thing, all the world, all America, felt my pain. I am a gold star mother. Whoever saw me felt me in their heart...

I cannot walk into a room with pictures of Humayun...Walking onto the convention stage, with a huge picture of my son behind me, I could hardly control myself. What mother could? Donald Trump has children whom he loves. Does he really need to wonder why I did not speak?

Donald Trump said that maybe I wasn't allowed to say anything. That is not true. My husband asked me if I wanted to speak, but I told him I could not...

When Donald Trump is talking about Islam, he is ignorant. If he studied the real Islam and Koran, all the ideas he gets from terrorists would change, because terrorism is a different religion."

Ghazala Khan's full remarks were posted as an op-ed in the Washington Post on the morning of July 31. See:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinio...856_story.html

Update, July 31, 8:33 pm:

Perhaps the best comment of all in response to Trump's insulting remarks directed at the grieving immigrant parents of a brave Muslim American soldier, who gave his life for our country while serving in Iraq, is the following tweet by Meghan McCain, daughter of Vietnam War hero and 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain:

"I would ask what kind of barbarian would attack the parents of a fallen soldier, but oh yeah it's the same person who attacks POW's."

See:

Update. July 31, 11:32 am:

The 1st century Roman writer and philosopher, Lucius Annaeus Seneca (who also became a tutor and adviser to the emperor Nero - which ultimately cost Seneca his own life), wrote the following about the effects of anger in his famous essay De Ira ("On Anger"):

dum alteri noceat sui negligens

("[Anger] hurts someone else while giving no thought to oneself.")

The following news stories in The Hill about Donald Trump's latest attack on the immigrant parents of a Muslim US solder who gave his life for America could well be an example of how Trump has been so anxious to lash out against and demonize minority immigrants that he may be hurting himself most of all.

The following is my original post:

By now, America has grown used to Donald Trump's attempts to demonize Muslims from around the world as "terrorists" and "haters of America", and to bar most, if not all, of them from entering the United States based on their countries of origin, if not on their religion itself.

But in a jaw-dropping extension of his verbal assaults against all members of one of the world's major religious groups, rather than just focusing on the relatively few who actually are terrorists or terrorist sympathizers and are highly dangerous to the safety of the American people, Trump has now attacked the immigrant parents of a Muslim American soldier who gave his life for this country.

In response to a moving speech at the Democratic convention by Khizr Khan, the immigrant father of US Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2004, Trump questioned why the mother of the dead soldier, Ghazala Khan, stood silent next to her husband on stage during the speech.

The obvious implication was that Mrs. Khan had remained silent because Muslims allegedly discriminate against women. If Trump genuinely cares about the status of women's rights in the Muslim world, there are many ways and places to have that discussion other than attacking the religion (or "culture" - a favorite buzzword used by bigots of all stripes and persuasions these days against groups they oppose) of the immigrant parents of a soldier who died fighting for America,

Not surprisingly, Trump's comment, once again, has received wide condemnation from leaders inside and outside the party that he now leads, including a spokesperson for House Speaker Paul Ryan. Also not surprisingly, Ghazala Khan herself has now spoken out against Trump, saying that she had been silent because she was in pain, not because of her religion. For the full story, see:

http://www.thehill.com/blogs/ballot-...slain-soldiers

and

http://www.thehill.com/blogs/blog-br...in-to-speak-at

Trump also gave his rival Hillary Clinton, not widely regarded as a great speaker, an opportunity to sound not only humane
but even eloquent. Here is her statement, as reported by The Hill above:

"I was very moved to see Ghazala Khan stand bravely and with dignity support her son on Thursday night. And I was very moved to hear her speak last night, bravely and with dignity, about her son's life and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country."

Clinton added:

"This is a time for all Americans to stand with the Khans, and with all the families whose children have died in service to our country. And it is a time to honor the sacrifice of Captain khan and all the fallen. Captain Khan and his family represent the best of America, and we salute them."

Bravo, Hillary! Donald Trump, are you listening? Which one is speaking for the real spirit of America?

The son is one thing, his father is another. A Muslim Brotherhood front who believes in Sharia and studied it in Saudi Arabia, his goal is the same as theirs, namely, infiltration and takeover of the U.S. govt. and the setting up of an Islamic republic where the Constitution is abolished. So when he asks Trump if he read the Constitution, he should ask that of himself, since the Quran is its archenemy and that's probably all he really wants Trump or any of us to read. The rest of this staged event is moose hockey. The real question is: Why is Hillary and her party so chummy with the Muslim Brotherhood, and want to open the doors of the U.S. to it? Why are you?

What makes the above comment so utterly false and offensive is that it assumes that anyone who took a scholarly interest in Sharia Law and wrote an article about it must, ipso facto, be in favor of imposing it on the United States. This is absolute, bigoted nonsense.

In his moving speech at the DNC convention, Khan vigorously defended the United States Constitution, a document that the proto-fascist GOP presidential candidate has most likely never read, just as Khan charges, and which that same presidential candidate shows little or no regard for whatsoever.

I Was Just Joking?: Media Apoplectic as Khizr Khan Attack on Donald Trump Goes Down in Flames

Mainstream media figures from the New York Times to the Huffington Post to CNN are apoplectic Monday as their latest attack on Donald J. Trump, the Republican nominee for president, has crumbled yet again under the slightest bit of scrutiny.

Specifically, the newest line of attack to fall apart is the criticism of Trump over Khizr Khan, the Muslim Gold Star father who spoke at the Democratic National Convention last week.

Over the weekend and for the past few days since Khan spoke alongside his wife Ghazala Khan about their son, U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq in 2004, media-wide reporters, editors, producers, and anchors have tried to lay criticism on Trump over the matter. They thought they had a good one, a specific line of attack that pitted Trump against the military?and supposedly showed him as a big meanie racist in the process.

But, as Breitbart News showed on Monday midday, that clearly was not the case. Khizr Khan has all sorts of financial, legal, and political connections to the Clintons through his old law firm, the mega-D.C. firm Hogan Lovells LLP. That firm did Hillary Clinton?s taxes for years, starting when Khan still worked there involved in, according to his own website, matters ?firm wide??back in 2004. It also has represented, for years, the government of Saudi Arabia in the United States. Saudi Arabia, of course, is a Clinton Foundation donor which?along with the mega-bundlers of thousands upon thousands in political donations to both of Hillary Clinton?s presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2016?plays right into the ?Clinton Cash? narrative.

All of this information was publicly available, and accessible to anyone?including any of these reporters, and Breitbart News?with a basic Google search. Anyone interested in doing research about the subjects they are reporting on?otherwise known as responsible journalism?would have checked into these matters. But clearly, none in the mainstream media did?probably because, as Fox News? Chad Pergram noted, Democrats ?sense blood in the water over? the whole Khan controversy.

With regard to the Breitbart News item posted by Nolan Rappaport above, the only "connection" it mentions between Khizr Khan, the Pakistani immigrant father of a brave Muslim-American soldier who died in the service of his country, and whom even Donald Trump has finally called a "hero", and Hillary Clinton, is that Khan once worked for a Washington law firm that represented the government of Saudi Arabia, which at one time gave $25 million to the Clinton Foundation.

Nothing that I have been able to find in that article or in either of its two links to other articles (one also by Breitbart.com and the other from an unrelated site - which mentions that Khan was highly regarded for his character by his colleagues in the firm) indicates that Khan personally worked on any matters involving either Saudi Arabia or the Clintons or had any personal connection with them.

What factual basis is there for Nolan's statement that Khan, through that law firm, had "all sorts of financial. legal and political connections" with the Clintons? Would such a statement stand up in any court of law based on such flimsy evidence?

Just because Khan once worked for a law firm that represented a foreign government which donated to Clinton's foundation, or that the firm prepared her taxes, does that mean there was any "financial, or political or legal connection" between Khan and Hillary Clinton? This is carrying the idea of guilt by association far beyond even the extent to which it was by the notorious Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950's.

And even if there had been such a connection, how wold that disqualify Khan from speaking out in support of his own son's supreme sacrifice for America and against attempts by Donald Trump to use anti-Muslim bigotry as a centerpiece of his presidential campaign?

As Nolan must surely know better than anyone else, it is very common for Washington law firms to represent foreign governments of every stripe, good and bad (and for better or worse - every US president in either party in living memory has regarded Saudi Arabia as an ally).

Merely working as a lawyer for such a firm, especially without any evidence that such a lawyer was personally involved in representing the government concerned, does not mean that the lawyer agrees with or supports any given action of policy of that government, any more than would be the case with any other client of a firm one happens to work for.

Nolan, as a distinguished lawyer, legal scholar and authority on immigration law, who is well versed in the ways of Washington as a former Congressional staffer, cannot possibly be unaware of this.

Nolan also claims that the same firm prepared Hillary Clinton's taxes. So what? Has anyone ever suggested that there was anything wrong with her taxes? At least she has released them.

America is still waiting for Donald Trump, who has hired someone as his campaign manager who, according to Paul Manafort's reputation as described in numerous news stories, personally represented some of the worst foreign dictators on earth, to do the same with Trump's own taxes.
