House GOP Leaders Meeting Next Week to Discuss Immigration Plans

Rate this Entry

Roll Call is reporting that House Republican leaders will meet next week to start planning for taking up immigration legislation. The meeting will be led by Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte and Immigration Subcommittee Chairman Trey Gowdy. One of the big issues will be whether immigration legislation will move in a comprehensive fashion or as smaller bills in a piecemeal approach.

Roll Call also reports that the House "Gang of Eight" is close to resolving it's approach to some of the more controversial issues like citizenship possibilities for legalized individuals.

Tax Changes Drive Surge In Americans Renouncing Citizenship

London-based American lawyers, who specialize in tax and immigration, report a threefold increase over the last five years in the number of American citizens who are giving up their citizenship - a process known as "renunciation".

Across the world 1,781 Americans renounced their citizenship in 2011 compared with just 231 in 2008, when US tax laws changed, although it remains unknown how many are adopting British rather than any other nationality.

Many decide to give up their American citizenship after tiring of the lengthy US tax return process, which requires them to pay tax on their total income regardless of where they live.

"There's no question that the number of people renouncing their US citizenship is increasing," said Diane Gelon, a US tax and immigration lawyer based in London.

AND THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING...WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE US ECONOMY COLLAPSES AND THERE IS NOT ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY RETIREES AND THE DISABLED...GUESS WHO WILL BE URGENTLY NEEDED TO HELP PAYING SUCH ASTRONOMICAL COSTS.

Tobias, what a horror! Almost 2,000 expatriates gave up US citizenship so they don't have to file a US return! That will ruin the country!

As long as we dont go the direction of UK we will survive but we will not thrive without the liberalization of skilled immigration policies!
