IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: MARK RYLANCE - ACTOR

Markrylance Congratulations to British-born actor Mark Rylance for his winning Best Actor in a Play at the 2008 Tony Awards. Rylance won for his role in Boeing, Boeing, a revival of a 1960s comedy. The actor is known for his performance in many of Shakespeare's plays, but his Broadway role is a little different. The play centers around an airline pilot having affairs with three flight attendants, none of whom is aware of the other. All is going well until Boeing introduces a faster jet...

I have to also say that Rylance gave a really funny, odd acceptance speech that left the audience scratching its head and laughing.

Here are a few clips from the well-received Broadway play:

I should also have mentioned the master planner/architect (hint: rhymes with Siskind) behind the re-building of Ground Zero:

"Daniel Libeskind, (born May 12, 1946 in Łódź, Poland) is an American architect of Polish-Jewish descent, who has designed many prominent and celebrated buildings."

NYC is all excited about a public art project which is scheduled to open on June 26, 2008 and run through the end of October. The "exhibit" consists of four gigantic waterfalls (one of which is under the Brooklyn Bridge). This was conceived by the Icelandic-Danish artist, Olafur Eliasson:

The article at the first link also mentions Anish Kapoor (an Indian immigrant) whose Sky Mirror exhibit I saw at the Rockefeller Center in 2006:

The article also mentions the artists (Bulgarian & Morrocon) who designed the famous and enonormously successful Gates "exhibit" in 2005 at NYC's Central Park:

"I'm a Zakaria fan and was happy to make him my Immigrant of the Day a few months back"

Great going, Greg. I must read your blog more diligently!

Some of your readers may have watched CNN's new show Fareed Zakaria GPS. He is an immigrant from India:

Mr. Zakaria's contributions to the US again prove the need to remove artificial quotas and move to a market based immigration system. If a US employer or a USC are willing to sponsor an employee/family member they should be granted immigration forthwith!
