Yesterday, I profiled a heroic translator working to expose injustice in this country. Today, I profile another brave immigrant and one that has only been in this country for a few short days. The New York Times has a front page story describing the harrowing escape story of Iranian dissident Ahmad Batebi. Batebi has spent much of the last decade working to end repression in Iran. He was arrested and tortured as a result of his efforts. The story of his fleeing Iran is amazing in and of itself. The Times describes the modern day Underground Railroad with Kurdish "conductors" helping dissidents move out of the country to eventual safety.
Mr. Batebi happens to be a filmmaker and documented his escape via video recording. The link above to the Times story includes a link to the video.
Welcome to America, Mr. Batebi, and we wish you well.
